Comb of Champions

Comb of Champions was a virtual representation of one of Eivor Varinsdottir's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.

Description

Eivor found several men searching for something near a lake's edge and investigated.

Dialogue

Eivor came across a man searching for something near the edge of a lake and a woman sitting on a blanket nearby.

• First Suitor: I'll be the one to find it. Just you wait and see.
• Bil: It must be around here somewhere.

Eivor spoke to the woman.

• Bil: I think there are some spots you missed!
• Eivor: What are these men hunting for?
• Bil: My comb. Whoever finds it wins an evening of my company. Care to join them?

She read a note left on a bench.

A Maiden's Missive

Hail, brave champions,
Come find my comb.
It is lost and lying low,
Where only the courageous go.
Be you bold of breath and blood,
Do not wallow in the mud,
Find me by the rushing waters,
And be my fish in shining armor.

Eivor came across another man at the top of the waterfall.

• Second Suitor: I think I found the comb! Wait... this is a jawbone.

Eivor dove to the bottom of the lake and retrieved the comb, then returned to Bil.

• Eivor: I think this is yours.
• Bil: Halt in your search! A winner, and my comb has been found. Now, the prize for finding my comb is some of my time. A walk in nature, maybe more if that is where our conversation takes us.
• Eivor: I see. Lead on.

Eivor followed Bil, talking as they walked.

• Bil: You are different than the kind my flights of fancy attract. Burdened, decorated, and... delicate.
• Eivor: Delicate?
• Bil: The others, they are like clubs. Blunt and ungainly, you are nimble, like a knife.
• Eivor: Are you so in need of suitors that any passing woodsman or vikingr will do?
• Bil: I was married once. My Alfi died five winters back. Ours was a perfect marriage. I do not need another. But, am I to go the rest of my days without love or attention? I think not.
• Eivor: And the comb?
• Bil: Could be a comb, could be a brooch, or an arm ring. So long as it's lost and to be found by a helping hand
• Eivor: Any good tales come of this?
• Bil: Once I thought the same man had stumbled across me three times... gave me a fright. Turned out to be triplets.

Bil and Eivor reached a spot on a nearby cliff.

• Eivor: If this comb is worth nothing to you, what shall I do with it?
• Bil: You could keep it. Comb your hair. Or, I could comb it if you like.
• Eivor: Comb my hair? Is that why those men scrambled over each other?
• Bil: I could do more than comb your hair, find all your knots and snags and tame them... if you'd like.

I would enjoy your touch.Thank you, but no.

Eivor spending time with Bil

• Eivor: My shoulders are tense, and my hair is a tangle. I could use a softer touch for these kinks.
• Bil: Then let me.

The two spent some time together.

• Bil: Hm-hm. Delicate touch, indelicate voice. This was fun, Eivor. Hold on to the comb, as a keepsake.
• Eivor: Thank you, Bil. You tamed some knots I haven't been able to reach myself.

• Eivor: Thank you for the offer, but I cannot. Here, your comb.
• Bil: You keep it. It was a reward for my champion. Farewell.

Outcome

Eivor recovered the comb for Bil and either slept with her or turned her down.

Trivia

• In any case Bil tells Eivor to keep the comb but it will actually disappear from the inventory if you choose to sleep with her and remain if you refuse.
