Rebecca Crane
Rebecca "Becs" Crane (born 1984) is a member of the Assassin Order and the creator of the Animus 2.0, which she affectionately refers to as "Baby". Although she has performed several field missions for the Order, she mainly uses her hacking and engineering expertise to provide technical support for other Assassins worldwide. She is also the wife of fellow Assassin Shaun Hastings.
In 2012, Rebecca and Shaun served as members of Lucy Stillman's team, which concentrated on acquiring an Apple of Eden before Abstergo Industries, as well as training Desmond Miles through the use of the Bleeding Effect. After escaping an Abstergo attack on their hideout in Rome, the team relocated to the Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni, where they successfully located the Apple using Ezio Auditore's genetic memories. However, upon retrieving the artifact from its vault, Desmond, under the influence of the Isu Juno, killed Lucy, who was secretly a mole for the Templars.
Traveling to the United States, where they were joined by the Assassins' Mentor and Desmond's father William, the team used Ezio's Apple to access the Grand Temple, seeking to find a solution to the forthcoming Second Disaster. Rebecca helped Desmond to relive the memories of his ancestors Haytham Kenway and Ratonhnhaké:ton in the Animus to find the Grand Temple Key, allowing the Assassins to access the temple's inner chambers and the global aurora borealis device housed within. While Desmond chose to sacrifice himself to activate the device and prevent the Second Disaster, the rest of the team got as far away as they could.
In 2013, Rebecca and Shaun infiltrated the Abstergo Entertainment branch of the Templars' front company Abstergo Industries to spy on their operations and learn the fate of Desmond's body, which had been recovered by the Templars. With the help of their inside man John Standish and a research analyst, the Assassins learned about the Sample 17 Project and acquired several files from Abstergo's servers. After John made a failed attempt on the analyst's life after being revealed as a Sage and Instrument of the First Will, Rebecca and Shaun apologized to the analyst and offered them a place with the Assassins.
In 2014, Rebecca and Shaun, on William Miles' orders, began to coordinate the activities of the Initiates, a hacking collective which had allied with the Assassins. The following year, they infiltrated the Abstergo headquarters in London to acquire information on the Templars' search for a Shroud of Eden. After a run-in with Sigma Team, the Assassins were able to learn the Shroud's location thanks to an Initiate who had relived the genetic memories of Jacob and Evie Frye. However, while attempting to recover the artifact, Rebecca, Shaun and Galina Voronina lost it to the Templars, and Rebecca was shot, though she would later make a full recovery.
In 2020, Rebecca and Shaun welcomed Layla Hassan into their cell after she had a falling out with her previous team. On the cell's first assignment, during which they were joined by Layla's old teammate Kiyoshi Takakura, they infiltrated an Abstergo facility in Tokyo to extract an Assassin mole, Dr. Kazui, and destroy samples of his DNA collected by the Templars. Despite a run-in with the Master Templar Juhani Otso Berg, the mission was a success and the Assassins managed to escape the facility.
Later that year, Rebecca and Shaun helped Layla explore the memories of the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir to find a solution to a series of anomalies affecting the Earth. After deducing the anomalies to be caused by Desmond's activation of the global aurora borealis device in 2012, and finding the Yggdrasil Chamber in Hordaland, Norway, Layla traveled to the chamber alone, ultimately managing to save the planet. However, this came at the cost of her life, as her consciousness became trapped in the Grey, and released the 9th-century Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq from his imprisonment. After meeting Basim, Rebecca and Shaun reluctantly granted him an audience with William Miles to determine whether the Assassins would work with him in the future.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Early life[edit | edit source]
Prior to joining the Assassins, Rebecca engaged in various extreme sports, including snowboarding and skydiving. However, when she suffered a broken leg, she began pursuing an interest in computers during her recovery, and found coding to be as entertaining as her previous hobbies. At one point, she also had a short-lived relationship with an electronics engineer.[2]
Some time after joining the Brotherhood, Rebecca was responsible for the recruitment of Shaun Hastings into the Order. Since he had discovered some of Abstergo Industries' secrets, Shaun had begun spreading the word about their plans, thus provoking unwanted attention. Rebecca attempted to ward him off, saying that he was "messing with the wrong people". She assumed that Shaun did not believe her, as he continued his work. Shaun later admitted that he would have wound up at the bottom of a river had Rebecca not stepped in to save his life.[3]
Rebecca was Clay Kaczmarek's teammate when he was tasked with infiltrating Abstergo Industries.[4] She was also an old friend of Lucy Stillman, though the two did not see each other for seven years after 2005, during the time Lucy was working undercover at Abstergo. The two only reunited in September 2012, after Lucy's escape from Abstergo's laboratories alongside Desmond Miles.[3]
At one point, Desmond asked Rebecca if she had ever used the Animus to learn about her ancestors. She commented that the lives she had relived were "lame" compared to those of Desmond's ancestors, complaining how boring it had been spending the whole day using firearms as a Prussian mercenary.[2]
Hiding out[edit | edit source]

In the Assassins' hideout in Rome, Rebecca served as technical support for the Animus 2.0, ensuring that nothing went wrong with the machine or with Desmond's interaction with it. She often left notes within the database entries that Shaun created, usually when the entries were locations that held Glyphs or Assassin Tombs. After Lucy gave her the memory core she had stolen from Abstergo's Animus, Rebecca excitedly integrated it with her own, successfully—albeit accidentally—transferring the encrypted files that Clay Kaczmarek had left behind in Ezio Auditore's memories.[3]
On irregular occasions when Desmond exited the Animus for a break, Rebecca would speak to him about the Assassin Brotherhood and his progress with the machine, once approvingly telling him that he was a natural at working with it. Shortly after Desmond received the warning from the Isu Minerva about an upcoming catastrophic event, Abstergo agents found and attacked the hideout. Rebecca helped Shaun collect the Animus equipment while Desmond and Lucy held off the Abstergo guards. As they escaped in a van, Rebecca managed to set up the Animus within it, allowing Desmond to enter the machine again and finish any remaining memories of Ezio while on their way to a new safehouse.[3]
Stay in Monteriggioni[edit | edit source]

After the team arrived at Monteriggioni and gained access to the Sanctuary, Rebecca was again responsible for the Animus and their other equipment. To power the underground chamber, Rebecca gave Desmond several devices of her own making, which would re-route small amounts of power to their new base upon being attached to circuit boxes across the town.[2]
Throughout their stay in the Villa Auditore, Rebecca regularly sent e-mails to her teammates, usually involving minor matters, such as her missing MP3 player and how Shaun had stolen Lucy's yogurt. She also informed Lucy, seemingly worried, that Desmond had been shouting in his sleep.[2]
Journey to the Colosseum[edit | edit source]
- Shaun: "Santa Maria Aracoeli. See those columns along the aisles? They're lifted from Roman ruins. Now, supposedly, this church was built on top of the ancient Temple of Juno."
- Rebecca: "I like the ceiling."
- Shaun: "You like the ceiling. Oh well, you are a fascinating traveling companion."
- —The Assassins arriving at Santa Maria in Aracoeli, 2012.[src]-[m]

When Desmond found out the location of Ezio's Apple of Eden and the team arrived at the Colosseum, Lucy took Rebecca and Shaun on an alternative route through Capitoline Hill at Shaun's suggestion; this was due to Shaun and Rebecca not possessing the necessary freerunning abilities to reach the Apple's location.[2]
When a hologram of the Isu Juno appeared and spoke to Desmond in the Colosseum Vault, Rebecca, along with Shaun and Lucy, could not perceive her. As Desmond retrieved the Apple, he was possessed by Juno. She presented him with a vision of what would happen if Lucy was left alive, and influenced Desmond to kill her with his Hidden Blade. When Juno relinquished her control, Rebecca and Shaun appeared physically unharmed.[2]
Monitoring Desmond[edit | edit source]

After Lucy's death and William Miles' arrival, Rebecca presided over the comatose Desmond, who had been placed back into the Animus to save his life.[2] While William was confident that Desmond would be safe, Rebecca cautioned that the Animus was not built to sustain cognitive processes, and that connecting Desmond to it in such a state was risky. However, after Desmond had relived Ezio's adventures in Constantinople and reached a Synch Nexus, he managed to regain consciousness.[5]
When he woke up, the Animus had once again been placed inside a van, and Rebecca occupied her usual spot beside him, keeping an eye on the machine and Desmond's health.[5] She retained this role after the team reached the Grand Temple in New York, which they accessed using their Apple of Eden in the hopes of finding a solution to the disaster Minerva had warned Desmond about.[6]
Grand Temple[edit | edit source]
- "You've sacrificed a lot for me. You and Shaun both. You upgraded the Animus, helped train me, pulled me out of that coma... You put all that work into the database. Helped me solve Clay's puzzles... I know I haven't been the easiest person to work with... And I'm sorry for that. And I just want you to know that even if I'm shitty at showing it-I appreciate everything you've done."
- ―Desmond thanking Rebecca, 2012.[src]-[m]
As the Grand Temple's inner vault required a key to access, Desmond used the Animus to relive the memories of Haytham Kenway and Ratonhnhaké:ton and find the key. He also occasionally left the temple to acquire power sources that Shaun and Rebecca tracked down, journeying to New York City and São Paulo.[6]

After Desmond encountered Daniel Cross in Manhattan during his hunt for a power source, Rebecca mentioned that she had heard of him previously. Though she had not known Cross personally, she knew Hannah Mueller, an Assassin that tried to turn him away from the Templars and was murdered by him. She explained that he had been important to the Assassins, and became upset when recalling how he used to be.[6]
During the search for the final power source, William volunteered to travel to Cairo to retrieve it, only to end up being captured by the Templars and taken to their facility in Rome, where Desmond had been previously held captive. Desmond stormed the facility with the Apple of Eden, rescuing his father and killing Cross and Warren Vidic.[6]
Once the key and all the power sources had been recovered, the Assassins gained access to the temple's inner vault, where they were met by holograms of Juno and Minerva. When Desmond was given the choice to let the world be destroyed or save it and release Juno, he told Rebecca, Shaun and William to leave and get as far away from the temple as possible. Once they had retreated, Desmond sacrificed himself to protect the Earth from the Second Disaster and liberated Juno from her prison.[6]
Undercover at Abstergo[edit | edit source]

Six months later in May 2013,[7] Rebecca and Shaun met with William's second-in-command Gavin Banks in Peru,[8] informing him that William had left the Order due to mourning Desmond's death, leaving behind a letter and a codex for Gavin.[9] On 29 May, after sailing north on the Altaïr II, Gavin dropped Rebecca and Shaun in California to spy for the Assassins in America.[10]
On 10 June, Rebecca and Shaun stopped in Texas, where Shaun got drunk while Rebecca took photos of him and later sent them to Gavin.[11] Eventually, while in Oklahoma City in August, they decided to honor William by finding out what had happened to Desmond's body, which was being used for Abstergo's Sample 17 Project to create entertainment products from his ancestors' memories.[12]

As they traveled through South Dakota, Rebecca and Shaun visited the ruins of the Farm where Desmond grew up on 6 September. Rebecca remarked that they barely knew Desmond, to which Shaun responded that despite that, they had experienced a lot together, like him killing Lucy whom they found out was a traitor, nursed him through his coma, sailed across the ocean and helped him and his father reconcile. After all that, he died to save the planet and made a difference. These words were of some comfort to Rebecca.[13]
By 24 October, as part of their mission to learn the fate of Desmond's body, Rebecca and Shaun infiltrated the Abstergo Entertainment facility in Montreal.[14] While Shaun took a job as a barista, Rebecca posed as a courier, collecting a number of data files that had been obtained by an Abstergo researcher at the behest of John Standish, the facility's head of IT.[15]

When John's true motives were revealed and he was subsequently killed by Abstergo security, Rebecca contacted the researcher directly, claiming that she and Shaun were willing to continue with the hacking project if the employee was as well. Using the information collected by the researcher, Rebecca and Shaun were ultimately able to help William move on from Desmond's death.[15]
On 2 December, Rebecca e-mailed Gavin, informing him of John's death and her and Shaun's intention to leave Montreal in order to analyze the data they had acquired and plan their next move.[16]
Discovering the Initiates[edit | edit source]

On 1 May 2014, Rebecca and Shaun reunited with William in his bunker in Norway. When the Altaïr II docked there, Rebecca came aboard to perform maintenance on the Hephaestus Email Network, when she discovered a series of coded spy reports sent to the "Initiates' Database".[17] Rebecca and Shaun subsequently tried to determine where the reports were being sent, while William interrogated Gavin's crew to figure out the spy's identity.[18]
Eventually, what Rebecca found on the Initiates convinced William and Gavin that they were a reasonable group, convincing them to spare Eric Cooper and Stephanie Chiu after they were exposed as the spies.[19] Rebecca was impressed when Cooper and Chiu showed her the Initiates' secret satellite network, dubbing it an "Outernet".[20]
Subsequently, William tasked her and Shaun with recruiting the Initiates to the Assassins' cause.[21] By November 2014, the two were already working with the Initiates alongside another Assassin, Bishop, using them to acquire information related to Abstergo's Phoenix Project.[22]
Searching for the Shroud[edit | edit source]

In October 2015, Rebecca and Shaun infiltrated Isabelle Ardant's office in London to acquire information on Abstergo's search for a Piece of Eden. In the process, they retrieved the genetic data of the Victorian era-twin Assassins Jacob and Evie Frye from Abstergo's archives, which was then given to Bishop in order to be analyzed by a member of the Initiates.[23]
Rebecca and Shaun also bugged the office and decided to wait for Ardant's return to eliminate her, only to be ambushed by Sigma Team agents Violet da Costa and Juhani Otso Berg. The pair narrowly escaped after Bishop detonated their pre-planted explosives, and made it back safely to their hideout, where Bishop informed them that the Initiate had identified the Piece of Eden as a Shroud.[23]
As Shaun said that Sigma Team was too much for them to handle, Bishop promised to send backup and asked the two to keep a low profile while the Initiate continued to synchronize with the Frye twins' memories. Rebecca later went to sleep while Shaun kept watch, at which point Galina Voronina joined their company.[23]

Later on, the Initiate's data synch confirmed that the Shroud was beneath Buckingham Palace, but the Templars got there first. The Assassins engaged Sigma Team and during the fighting, Shaun killed Ardant with his Shock Blade, but Rebecca took a bullet for him from Violet. As the rest of Sigma Team showed up and Violet fled with the Shroud, Shaun remained by Rebecca's side waiting for Galina to clear the exit.[23] Some time after this event, Eric Cooper managed to extract Rebecca and Shaun from London.[24]
Helping Griffin[edit | edit source]
By October 2016,[25] Rebecca had made a full recovery from her gunshot wound and returned to active duty as a field agent. Setting up a hideout in an abandoned house, Rebecca built a new Animus from a processor and blueprints that Shaun had retrieved from the Abstergo Foundation Rehabilitation Center in Madrid, although she was forced to disable the Parietal Suppressor that had come with it.[26]
She was later joined by Griffin, Owen Meyers, and Javier Mondragón, who had narrowly escaped a Templar raid on their own Assassin safehouse.[26] Rebecca assisted Owen in reliving the memories of his ancestor, Zhang Zhi, in a desperate bid to search for the second prong of the Trident of Eden,[27] before being forced to leave on a separate mission, much to Griffin's disappointment.[28]
Mission to Tokyo[edit | edit source]
By 2020, Rebecca and Shaun were married, and both were assigned to a new Assassin cell with Layla Hassan, after she fell out with her previous team following an incident in Atlantis.[29] For their first mission together, the team traveled to Tokyo, where Layla had intercepted a message from an Abstergo facility involving extensive analysis of Isu artifacts upon non-voluntary subjects. They were also joined by Layla's former teammate, the Japanese Assassin Kiyoshi Takakura.[30]

While the facility's main entrance was poorly guarded, the team elected to enter through the roof, bypassing the security.[30] An informant within the facility left the group a note encrypted within an Animus. Upon obtaining and decrypting the note, the Assassins discovered that the Templars were performing experiments with a Staff of Eden.[31] After Layla, the only one with detailed Animus experience and training, entered the simulation of the Venetian Assassin Bastiano da Mezzo, they discovered that their informant was his modern-day descendant, Dr. Kazui, and they moved to extract him.[32] Intent on hindering the Templars' plans, the group infiltrated the DNA analysis room and destroyed Dr. Kazui's DNA to prevent Abstergo from exploring his genetic memories.[33]
The group safely found Dr. Kazui before Abstergo could use him. Along the way, they also analyzed any data and documents they could about their experiments regarding the Staff.[34] Disguising the doctor in an Abstergo guard's uniform, the four Assassins were able to exfiltrate him before Abstergo even realized what was happening. Along the way, however, the doctor got cut, leaving behind trails of blood.[35] Returning to the premises, any trace of Dr. Kazui had to be wiped clean. They also stopped to erase his DNA data from the Abstergo database.[36]
Before they could leave the facility, the Assassins were cornered by Layla's nemesis Juhani Otso Berg and faced him as the building was engulfed in flames.[36] After a four-on-one fight, Berg was subdued and the Assassins escaped. Afterwards, the team parted ways with Kiyoshi.[37]
Finding the Wolf-Kissed[edit | edit source]

By May 2020, the Earth's magnetic field, which had continued to increase in potency since the 2012 coronal mass ejection, had become strong enough to create several major electromagnetic disturbances around the world, resulting in a permanent aurora borealis over the globe. While looking for a solution, Rebecca, Shaun and Layla received a strange message from an unknown location, which led them to a Viking grave in New England dating to the 9th century.[29]
Discovering the remains of the Raven Clan shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir, Rebecca helped Layla to relive the Viking's memories in the Animus, monitoring her condition. During her sessions, Layla came across certain anomalies in the simulation, not too different from the glyphs encountered by Desmond during his own sessions years ago. When Layla completed these anomalies, they revealed a complete and unfettered Isu memory straight from the source, something which amazed both Rebecca and Shaun. They had only seen such a complete memory once before.[29] The team also concluded that Eivor was a human incarnation of Odin, as the visions experienced by the Viking matched this memory.[38]
After Layla's session ended with Eivor's discovery of the Yggdrasil chamber in Hordaland, Norway,[39] Rebecca and Shaun concluded that the strengthening of the Earth's magnetic field had been caused by Desmond's activation of the global aurora borealis device, and that Yggdrasil could be used to reverse the process and return the magnetic field the normal proportions. Shaun then proceeded to drive Layla to the Boston airport so that she could travel to Norway and access the Yggdrasil chamber. Unbeknownst to both him and Rebecca, this was the last time either of them would see their teammate.[29]

After Layla sacrificed herself to save the planet like Desmond had done eight years prior and chose to remain in the Grey, she sent Rebecca and Shaun a final message informing them of her fate and discouraging them from coming to rescue her. Shortly after, the two Assassins met the 9th-century Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq, the reincarnation of Loki, who had been inadvertently released from his imprisonment inside the Grey by Layla.[29]
Once Rebecca and Shaun brought him up to speed with the differences between the Assassins and Hidden Ones and their conflict with the Templars, Basim asked to meet their Mentor, William Miles, face-to-face. Despite their anger towards Basim for abandoning Layla in the Grey and his dubious motives, Rebecca and Shaun complied and left to summon William while Basim remained at the New England cabin to explore Eivor's memories for himself.[29]
Sabotaging the Nexus Eye[edit | edit source]
In 2023, Rebecca and Shaun worked together to infiltrate Abstergo's Nexus Eye project, led by the security technician and Templar Dominika Wilk. The project aimed to extract code from the Antikythera mechanism and integrate it with Animus technology to create a computer capable of predicting and influencing human behavior. To sabotage the project, Rebecca and Shaun enlisted the help of a hacker to infiltrate Dominika's team as a mole and strategically place logic bombs within Abstergo's stored genetic memories.[40]
The mission was ultimately a success, but the Assassins' victory was short-lived, as Dominika traced the hacker's location and dispatched a Templar squad to capture them. As a result, Rebecca and Shaun were forced to cease contact with the hacker and go dark.[40]
Personality and traits[edit | edit source]
Rebecca is an energetic and somewhat immature young woman. Despite the fact that she has saved his life multiple times, Shaun is quick to belittle and gibe at her, though she is rarely provoked. At one point, when she commented on a movie as Shaun was explaining the historical background of the Bonfire of the Vanities, he irritably told her to be quiet since "the grownups are talking".[3]

Rebecca is tolerant and optimistic, representing a foil to Shaun's more cynical and brash personality. As the polar opposite of her colleague, she is friendly and talkative, as well as encouraging towards new recruits, calling Desmond a "natural" at using the Animus.[3] She shows great pride in her work, praising her redesign of the Animus as having a far more enlightened and creative construct than Abstergo's version; a "competitive edge" as she once called it.[3]
Despite Shaun's dubiousness of their methods, Rebecca remains convinced that the Assassins are, as Desmond put it, "the good guys".[3] She can also be deeply affected by the loss of those in the Order, becoming quieter and more closed off after Lucy's death and at the mention of Hannah's passing.[6] Alongside Shaun, she also expressed anger towards Basim for tricking Layla and abandoning her in the Grey, claiming that they had to save her despite both Layla and Basim's insistence otherwise.[29]
Rebecca is a vegetarian, which was first expressed in 2012, when she called Desmond a 'carnivore' after seeing him eat a burger.[2] In the database entry he made on her in 2015, Shaun complained that this made finding food difficult whenever they were on an assignment.[23]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Rebecca Crane is a character first introduced in the 2009 video game Assassin's Creed II, where she was voiced by the American actress Eliza Jane Schneider. She would later appear as a central modern-day character in many subsequent games of the series, with Schneider reprising her role in all of them.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The name Rebecca is derived from the Hebrew name Rivqah (רִבְקָה), meaning ""snare", "noose", "tied up", "secured", and sometimes "beautifully ensnaring". The surname Crane is derived from the bird, crane, originally deriving from the Old English and German words Cron, Krahn and Kranich all meaning "crown".
- When Desmond relived the memories of Ezio in the Animus 2.0, Rebecca occasionally added information to the database using the name REBECCAC84.
- During one of her conversations with Desmond in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Rebecca revealed that she once used the Animus to relive the memories of one of her ancestors, a Prussian mercenary, and that she found the experience boring. She then added that her ancestors were nowhere near as interesting as Desmond's.
- Rebecca's e-mail password is Snowmass84, likely to reflect her previous hobby.
- In one of her e-mails, Rebecca talked about sometimes missing her family and her dog.
- In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, it was suggested that Rebecca was a reckless driver, as when she offered to drive the van, Shaun refused, saying, "Ah, nice try. I've seen your car."
- In Assassin's Creed III, Shaun made a similar remark: when Desmond attempted to parachute from one skyscraper to another, Shaun doubted he would make it, saying "I'm pretty sure she was high when she ran the numbers.", referring to her occasional recreational use of drugs.[41]
- In The Lost Archive DLC trailer, Rebecca could be heard saying "Vidic, you kept him in Animus too long." However, she did not appear in the DLC.[42]
- In Assassin's Creed: Unity, Bishop mentioned that she has worked with Rebecca in the past.
- In Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, Rebecca mentioned having a cousin living in Vancouver named Mark, who had heterochromia. She suggested taking a sample of his blood the next time her cell was in his area, on the off chance that he turned out to be a Sage.[43]
- In Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, Shaun mentioned that him and Rebecca were expecting a baby soon, implying that Rebecca was pregnant at the time.[44]
