William Niblo (1790 – 1878) was an Irish-born American businessman, and the owner and manager of the theater Niblo's Garden in New York City.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In July 1863, Niblo's Garden hosted the Italian opera singer Adelina Patti. On the night of her performance, William nervously interacted with Adelina in her dressing room, attempting to settle the financial arrangements for her performance. Adelina asserted her conditions for payment. Despite William's initial struggles, the two were able to reach an agreement, as Adeline accepted cash instead of gold for the remainder of her fee, and William scurried away to retrieve it.[1]

After bringing her the remainder of the agreed pay, Adelina proceeded to the stage. During her exceptionally flawless performance. William, impressed, mentioned that she earned more in a week than the President of the United States made in a year.[1]

Personality and traits[edit | edit source]

William was a somewhat anxious and harried individual, though he appeared diligent in his responsibilities, dealing directly with Adelina Patti and handling the financial aspects of her performance. While flustered and nervous, he tried his best to be flexible in working out an alternative payment method for the singer.[1]
