The Roach Guards were an ethnically Irish gang based in New York City and active from the 1820s to the 1860s.

History[edit | edit source]

In July 1863, during the build up towards the New York City draft riots, the Roach Guards, the Bowery Boys, the Daybreak Boys gangs, as well as smaller groups, agreed to a temporary cease to their hostilities in order to work towards a bigger prize. Convinced to riot by the American Templars' Grand Master William M. Tweed, the Roach Guards were eager to spread discord.[1]

On 12 July, New York City policeman Tommy Greyling saw members of the Roach Guards and Bowery Boys carrying assortments of weapons. When pressed for information, one of the gang members gave Tommy a snide remark and kept working.[2] Around the same time, in a different part of the city, the Assassin Varius moved through Paradise Square and through to the heart of Five Points, the Roach Guards' center of power. Though no one challenged them moving through the area, the lone Assassin received many stares and Irish curses.[3]

In the early hours of 13 July before daybreak, Tommy Greyling escorted the opera singer Adelina Patti to the safety of his brother's empty house. Discussing the riot, Tommy told Adelina that he saw what seemed like normal protestors holding signs, though he saw through the ruse and recognized many of them as Roach Guards.[4]
