The Elgring Clan a group of Vikings led by their jarlskona, Toka Sinricsdottir. From 885 to 886, the clan fought the forces of Charles the Fat during his campaign in West Francia.
History[edit | edit source]
Formed in the 9th century, the Elgring Clan was led by jarl Sinric, brother of Sigfred, and lived in the north of Francia. After Charles' forces advanced on their encampment, the clan was forced south and resettled in the town of Melun, from where they plundered the surrounding regions in Francia.[1]
Sometime before the Siege of Paris, Sinric was killed when soldiers led by Bishop Engelwin infiltrated Melun and murdered him in his sleep. After gutting his corpse, the soldiers left it outside to be mutilated by animals until Sigfred found it, by which time the body was unrecognizable save for the carved wooden toy of Eikþyrnir that Sinric had kept with him after winning it from his brother as a child. Sinric's body was buried in the clan's Burial Mounds outside Melun, with a large runestone marking the grave. Sinric's murder led to Sigfred being crowned the new jarl and fueled his lust for revenge against Charles the Fat.[1]
In 885, preparing for his attack on the city of Paris, Sigfred sent his niece Toka to England to enlist more jarls to join in the fight. Finding no help from other clans, she sailed to Ravensthorpe and set up in the clan's small guest house, hoping to enlist Eivor Varinsdottir to join the siege.[2] After some deliberation and a feast, Eivor sailed with Toka back to Francia.[3][1]
With Eivor helping by killing members of the religious zealots known as the Bellatores Dei, the clan was able to lay siege to Paris. Invading the walls of the Île de la Cité, Sigfred's forces stormed towards the Palais de la Cité but a trap was set. Many of Sigfred's men were killed and they were obliged to retreat, resulting in a slaughter of innocent civilians at the church of Saint-Étienne. As Eivor infiltrated the Palais to force Count Odo of France to surrender the city and end the bloodshed, the clan formed an uneasy truce with Charles the Fat, earning some silver and naming Sigfred the Lord of Rouen, an act that Odo, as the rightful lord of Rouen and Amiens, viewed as a betrayal.
Celebrating the riches they had won, the clan held a festival in Melun. But Sigfred had become disillusioned with the Norse gods, believing life was only meant for plundering, feasting, and drinking, while holding fast to his vengeance against Charles and Francia for the loss of his brother. He wanted to march south and continue pillaging Francia but Eivor objected on the grounds that she only wanted to protect her own lands and had not agreed to invade elsewhere. Sigfred, annoyed with Eivor's perceived disloyalty, challenged her to a holmgang. At the Burial Mounds, Eivor either persuaded him to think what Sinric would have said of his revenge lust and he relented, deciding to leave behind all he knew to find a new way and placing the future in Toka's hands, or accepted his challenge, defeating and killing him.
With Toka made jarlskona, she received Odo and his men-at-arms in Melun, who had left Paris after being slighted by the terms of the truce Charles made with Sigfred and sought an accord with her clan to depose him for good. While Eivor left for Amiens to deal with Charles and ultimately chose to let him live, the summit turned tense. Despite this, Odo found a measure of relief in how Eivor handled Charles and forged a truce with the Elgring Clan, turning his attention to rebuilding Paris and revitalizing Francia. Thanking Eivor, Toka gave her Sinric's old armband, saying she hoped she could one day lead as well as Eivor did.
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The Elgring Clan is a faction introduced in The Siege of Paris, the August 2021 downloadable expansion for the 2020 video game Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. Unlike most organizations in the Assassin's Creed series, this one is not directly mentioned in the game and instead takes its name from pre-release review articles by entertainment sites like IGN,[4] GamesRadar,[5] and VG247.[6]
The name Elgring derives from the Old Norse word elgr, meaning "elk" but referring Alces alces which is called moose in North America. The clan symbol however depicts a wapiti which is called "elk" in North America but is not native and would be unknown to Europeans during the setting of the game.
