The Oltrarno District was one of the four main districts of Florence during the Renaissance.

History[edit | edit source]

Oltrarno was one of the oldest areas of the city, and was heavily populated by craftsmen. In addition, the religious community was well represented, with the monastery and church of Santo Spirito.[1]

Later in Florentine history, the Medici bought the Palazzo Pitti, connecting it to the Palazzo della Signoria and the Uffizi with a series of secret passages, one of which crossed the upper level of the Ponte Vecchio. The network was a smart investment considering all the different people throughout the Renaissance who had attempted to kill them.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

During the events of the Bonfire of the Vanities downloadable content, Borgia guards can be seen fighting Savonarola's men throughout the district. Strangely, even after the completion of the DLC, these encounters continue to occur; for example, a group of Borgia guards attacking a patrol of Savonarola troops north of Santo Spirito.
