Thyra Haraldsdottir
Thyra Haraldsdottir (972 – 1000) was a 10th century Danish shieldmaiden and the bastard daughter of King Harald Bluetooth. While her parentage was not a secret, Thyra despised her coward father and never asked Harald to publicly acknowledge her as his daughter.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 985, after her father married Gyrid of Sweden and reluctantly allied with his brother-in-law, Styrbjörn the Strong,[1] Thyra joined the army that fought against King Eric of Svealand to take back the throne for Styrbjörn. After Harald betrayed Styrbjörn and left with all the Danes under the cover of the night,[2] Thyra opted to stay with the Swedish Prince.[3] During the campaign against Eric, Thyra married Styrbjörn, who gifted her a sword and placed Harald's dagger in the mound as a gift to the gods.[4]
Thyra was told to return to Gyrid, to avoid any casualty and possible consequence of the upcoming battle.[4] Although she agreed, Thyra secretly stayed and later held him in his last moments during the Battle of Fýrisvellir. Bound, Thyra was taken as prisoner and gifted to her late husband's victor, Östen Jorundsson, as his thrall. Fortunately, after Östen took her home for a family dinner, he set her free. However, Thyra stayed to recover Styrbjörn's sword from their marriage.[5]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
From their night together, Thyra sired a child with Styrbjörn and is thus an ancestor to Sean Molloy.[6]
