Heimdall (Old Norse: Heimdallr) was an Isu who was later remembered in Germanic and Norse mythology as an Æsir god possessing foreknowledge, keen eyesight and hearing. He used these talents to keep watch for invaders and the onset of Ragnarök while drinking fine mead in his dwelling Himinbjörg, located where the burning rainbow bridge Bifröst met the sky.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Heimdall was a son of Odin and brother of Thor and Baldr. As the Great Catastrophe approached, Heimdall and eight other Norse Isu uploaded their DNA data into Yggdrasil to be later redistributed into the human gene pool. Moments later, Heimdall would be killed by Loki, who snuck into the Yggdrasil chamber as part of a plan to ensure his own survival. After the others left to meet their fate, Loki impaled Heimdall through the back of his chair and took his mask, using it to upload his own DNA to Yggdrasil.[6]

Millennia later, in the 770s CE, Heimdall was incarnated as Rig Reidarasson.[4]

Mythology[edit | edit source]

Heimdall was the son of nine mothers.[7]

Legacy and influence[edit | edit source]

Heimdall had a totem named after him in the popular dice game Orlog, played during the 9th century. The piece "Heimdall's Watch" would heal the player depending on the amount of blocks performed. The Norse man Mundi, a resident of Ravensthorpe who often frequented the Barracks, possessed the piece, which he gave to the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir after being defeated.[8]

By 870 CE, a temple dedicated to Heimdall was built atop the Feiknstafir mountains in Norway and was used to store a wealth of treasure, including an Apple of Eden. The temple's interior featured several paintings inspired by Norse mythology, including a depiction of Heimdall's home, Himinbjörg.[7]
