Cumberland Bay

Cumberland Bay is a small island in the Caribbean, located along the southern shore of Cuba, with a group of sandbars to the east that often inhibit naval movement around the island. The island itself consists of two large rock formations covered in foliage, several palm trees, and a shallow lagoon in the middle.[1]
During the early 18th century, the island was uninhabited, making it a safe haven for fugitive pirates and privateers.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
At some point between 1716 and 1722, a group of Templar privateers took refuge on the island and began exerting their influence over the surrounding bay. The pirate Edward Kenway accepted a contract from the Assassin Brotherhood to eliminate the Templars' captain, liberating the bay.[2]
In 1737, the bay's waters were the site of a battle between the Experto Crede, captained by Adéwalé, and a slave ship's escorts. Adéwalé sank the escorts, though not before they fired on the slave ship to ensure that its cargo, the slaves, did not survive. Graves were later dug on the island by Augustin Dieufort and the Maroons to honor those that had failed to escape the sinking vessel.[3]
