Leonardo Loredan (1436 – 1521) was the Doge of Venice from 1501 until his death, and an ally to the Italian Assassins in the city.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Becoming Doge[edit | edit source]
Loredan's predecessor, Agostino Barbarigo, was an ally of the Assassins but betrayed them late into his reign by succumbing to corruption, accepting bribes from the Borgia. The Assassins decided to make an example out of him and, after months of sowing fear and insecurity with vague and threatening letters, they finally poisoned him in 1501.[1]
The Assassins hoped that Barbarigo's death would send a clear warning to his as-yet undecided successor. Once Loredan emerged as the new Doge, the Brotherhood delivered him a more explicit warning about crossing the Assassins.[1]
Reign as Doge[edit | edit source]
Early in his reign, Loredan scouted a young actor named Bastiano da Mezzo during one of his performances. Impressed with his skill, the Doge introduced Bastiano to the Italian Assassins, encouraging him to join the Brotherhood.[2]
At the end of 1502, Loredan signed a peace treaty with the Ottoman Empire's Sultan Bayezid II, which ended the second Ottoman–Venetian War.[3]
Under Loredan, Venice's power grew in northern Italy, leading Pope Julius II to establish the League of Cambrai as an anti-Venetian alliance between several European monarchs.[4][5]
Upon Ezio Auditore's return from the east with his new fiancé Sofia Sartor in 1512, Loredan was one of the guests at their wedding in Venice.[6]
