Cudberct (died 870s), also known as Eel of Earth, was a Zealot of the Order of the Ancients who operated in England in the 9th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Nothing is known about Cudberct's childhood. Grown to be a deeply emotional man, Cudberct saw the impact and consequences of his part on certain people's demises. With the silver he received from every job he did, Cudberct paid for services of each victim and mourned their losses as well. Within the Order, Cudberct built a loyal and professional relationship with the Order member, The Anvil.[1]

In his rounds, Cudberct patrolled the area along the roads of the eastern and southern parts of Oxenefordscire. It was during one such patrol that he came across and was killed by the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir, who was allied with the Hidden Ones. Afterwards, Eivor found a clue among Cudberct's personal effects. The clue, showing the title, The Anvil, stated that Eivor needed to investigate the smithy next to ruins on St. Albanes Abbey, in Oxenefordscire, just north of Lunden.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

  • Like other Zealots, Cudberct had unique fighting tactics and gadgets in his weaponry. Upon Eivor's instigation, Cudberct wielded a poison-implemented spear, attacked by throwing spears and poisonous grenades, and packed rations to heal himself during the fight.
  • For The Anvil, Cudberct has the same clue as The Scabbard, whom Eivor also assassinated along her journey.
  • Ironically, Cudberct may be found in vicinity of the same abbey, where Eivor has to investigate for The Anvil.
