Newport is a seaside city in Rhode Island, United States.
History[edit | edit source]
During the American Revolutionary War, the Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton sent his recruits to Newport to help with Rhode Island's war effort many times. First, to give support for the 1st Rhode Island Regiment to protect Newport and Aquidneck Island after the War Council left the Colony to its own defenses,[1] then to escort a secret shipment of black powder from the pier to the magazine,[2] and finally to discern what made the people of Rhode Island so unified in their desire to separate from England.[3]
In 1777, Ratohnhaké:ton travelled to Newport personally to assist spymaster Jeremiah Scudder, unaware that Scudder was secretly a Templar. After stealing some documents, Ratohnhaké:ton attempted to meet with Scudder's most secret informant, Aldon Beckworth, only to witness his capture by British Regulars. After freeing the informant, Ratohnhaké:ton returned to Scudder, who recognised that this meant his spy ring had been uncovered, and gave him one final task of infiltrating Newport's British fort and destroying whatever evidence he could find.[4]
With the assistance of Scudder's spies, the Continental Army uncovered the location of British Lieutenant-General Richard Prescott in a farmhouse near Newport, allowing William Barton and his men, aided by Ratohnhaké:ton, to capture Prescott,[5] whom they later exchanged for General Charles Lee.[6] In the process, Ratohnhaké:ton rescued one of Scudder's spies, Lawrence Cato, who was being held prisoner by Prescott.[5] Revealing himself as a former Assassin, Cato informed Ratohnhaké:ton of Scudder's Templar affiliations, leading to the Assassin tracking him down and eliminating him.[7]
In 1784, the Louisianan Assassin Aveline de Grandpré travelled to Newport to recruit Patience Gibbs into the Assassin Order on Ratohnhaké:ton's behalf, only to witness Patience's capture by the Templar doctor Edmund Judge.[8] Aveline rescued her from Fort Washington, though Patience refused to ally with the Assassin and attempted to flee, leading to her recapture. After Judge forced her to give up her necklace, Patience was saved by Aveline once again, and agreed to work with her to retrieve the charm from the Templar.[9]
Confronting Judge in the Newport Tower, the two women eliminated him and retrieved the charm. Patience then revealed a missing piece she had been hiding and, after demonstrating the charm's functions, she accepted Aveline's invite to join the Assassins as they left for the Davenport Homestead.[10]
