The Peloponnesian War (431 – 404 BCE) was a military conflict fought in ancient Greece between the Delian League and the Peloponnesian League. At the head of these leagues were the main city states of Athens and Sparta, respectively, who fought for dominance over the Greek world. While the conflict engulfed the area, the misthios Kassandra would sometimes employ herself and her crew in the service of either League.[6]

The first phase of the war was named the "Archidamian War", after King Archidamos of Sparta. In 404 BCE, the war was eventually won by Sparta and the Peloponnesian League, ending with the occupation of Athens.[6]

History[edit | edit source]

In 431 BCE, the Spartan general Nikolaos and his adopted son Stentor, with the assistance of Kassandra, captured Megara.[1] Later, the Athenian army would recapture it.[6]

In 425 BCE, the Spartans and Athenians engaged each other at Pylos. The Spartans were led by Brasidas and assisted by Kassandra. The Athenians were led by Kleon and assisted by Deimos. During the fight, Brasidas was injured and Kassandra was captured. The Athenian army was eventually victorious.[4]

In 424 BCE, Brasidas captured Amphipolis, an Athenian colony, without bloodshed. The Athenians sent Thucydides to retake the city, but he was defeated and later exiled.[10]

In 423 BCE, the Spartans and Athenians entered into an armistice, which was broken in 422 BCE.

That year, the Spartan and Athenian forces engaged each other at Amphipolis. The Spartans, led by Brasidas, defeated the Athenians. Kassandra assassinated Kleon during the battle, but Brasidas also lost his life, being killed by Deimos.[5]

Sometime in the 420s BCE, Mykonian and Delian rebels, supported by Sparta, would murder Podarkes, leader of the Silver Islands.[11] The Athenian army led by Diokles was later defeated by Thaletas, Herodianos, and Kassandra.[2]

After the Battle of Amphipolis, which saw the demise of important military commanders on both sides of the conflict, the Delian and Peloponnesian Leagues agreed to peace talks. The Peace of Nicias was signed in 421 BCE, heralding the end of the first half of the war,[12] though the treaty would be broken eight years later and the conflict resumed.[13]
