The Southern Sporades is an archipelago in the southern Aegean Sea off the coast of Anatolia. Two of its most prominent islands are Kos and Samos, the former of which was the birthplace of the Greek physician Hippokrates.[1]
Sparsely populated in the 5th century BCE, it was covered with dense pine forests and white, sandy beaches.[2]
