Tea Bowls for Rikyu was a virtual representation of one of Fujibayashi Naoe's and Yasuke's genetic memories, relived through the Animus EGO.[1]

Description

Naoe meets tea master Sen no Rikyū after their previous meeting in Sakai.

Dialogue

While in northern Kyoto west of the Imperial Palace, Naoe met the tea master Sen no Rikyū in a residence.

  • Sen no Rikyu: Ah, a familiar face.

Naoe approached him.

  • Sen no Rikyu: Ah! A pleasure to see you again, my child.

The two bowed to one another as greeting.

  • Naoe: I remembered your lesson, Master Rikyu.
  • Sen no Rikyu: Yes. We meet as equals. As we are all equal under heaven.
  • Naoe: I owe you a proper introduction. My name is Naoe. What brings you to Kyoto?
  • Sen no Rikyu: I am advising a friend who is building a tea house. It has turned out to be a larger undertaking than first assumed. But the potential for wabi in this space is particularly enticing to me.
  • Naoe: Wabi? The... poverty of the space?
  • Sen no Rikyu: Yes. Humility, simplicity. Almost unfinished. Do you see?
  • Naoe: I do see a very humble and simple space before me.
  • Sen no Rikyu: Well, perhaps a touch too unfinmished, at any rate.
  • Naoe: Your knowledge of tea surely extends to teahouses.
  • Sen no Rikyu: Hm. Tell me. Did Sokyu appreciate the gift of the Shutoku ladle?
  • Naoe: When he heard it came from you, he promised to repay you for your act of generosity.
  • Sen no Rikyu: Is that so.
  • Naoe: You were very kind to help me, Master Rikyu.
  • Sen no Rikyu: Then I have a favor to ask in return. A teahouse is not complete without tea bowls. Would you find me some on your travels?
  • Naoe: Where do you suggest I find them?
  • Sen no Rikyu: Even the smallest village shop may hide a great treasure. Bring me back whatever you find.
  • Naoe: I will.

Naoe left and later returned to speak to Rikyu after acquiring one bowl.

  • Sen no Rikyu: The other day I came across a beautiful bowl. Repaired in the kintsugi fashion.
  • Naoe: I know kintsugi. My father's tsuchibue was repaired this way.
  • Sen no Rikyu: So you know the damage is not treated as something to conceal, but rather as part of an object's story.
  • Naoe: The imperfection makes it even more beautiful. It has a past.
  • Sen no Rikyu: And becomes all the more profound. Have you anything more for me to look at?
  • Naoe: Not at the moment.
  • Sen no Rikyu: Come back when you have found any that will intrigue me. Think simple and refined. That is what I seek.

Naoe eventually returned to speak with Rikyu after finding three bowls.

  • Naoe: I've been on quite the journey finding these bowls for you.
  • Sen no Rikyu: And has the path to your aims been clear?
  • Naoe: To your tea bowls or in my life? For both, almost never.
  • Sen no Rikyu: Ah. To those moments of confusion, I say kankyakka. Look under your own feet!
  • Naoe: It's that easy, is it?
  • Sen no Rikyu: It can be. What we need is often already with us. As is our way through life. Anything else for me, Naoe?
  • Naoe: I have not found any more yet.
  • Sen no Rikyu: I am sure you will find wonderful examples for me.

Naoe returned to Rikyu after collecting five bowls.

  • Sen no Rikyu: Many have asked how I could welcome a ruthless warlord like Lord Nobunaga in my teahouse. But I did not have Lord Nobunaga in my teahouse. I merely welcomed a guest. All who enter do so as equals. All must bow to pass through the nijiriguchi, whether a simple laborer or a powerful daimyo. All warriors leave their weapons at the door. There are no exceptions. Only a few more bowls and my teahouse will be ready for guests. Do you have them?
  • Naoe: I will find more for you.

(The comments Naoe makes after she acquires the tea bowls are randomized, and not fixed)

  • Naoe: This should catch Master Rikyu's eye. I'll bring it back to see what he thinks.
  • Naoe: This tea bowl... The rough edges are beautiful.
  • Naoe: Master Rikyu would like this tea bowl. It's plain and elegant.
  • Naoe: This tea bowl looks rustic.
  • Naoe: This tea bowl has a very unusual rim.
  • Naoe: This tea bowl feels sturdy. The potter made it with great care.

(After having acquired several tea bowls)

  • Naoe: Ah! Another tea bowl.

After killing Joken Hyokko, Naoe acquired the Classic Tea Bowl Collection from his body. She handed the bowl to Rikyu in Kyoto.

  • Sen no Rikyu: Where did you find this?
  • Naoe: I slayed the warrior-monk Hara Joken, and I found it nearby.
  • Sen no Rikyu: I know this tea bowl. It belonged to Lord Matsunga Hisahide... but he and his son Kojiro have been dead for years. The bowl was said to have been destroyed when he died so that Lord Nobunaga would not claim it. And yet... here it is. Strangely heavy... with the weight of vengeance and hate. Perhaps I will not use this for ceremonies just yet.

In the city of Kameyama in Tamba, Naoe acquired the Simple Tea Bowl Collection from the ornament vendor.

On the road leading to Honnō-ji in Kyoto, Naoe acquired the Rustic Tea Bowl Collection from the ornament vendor.

Near the docks of Sakai in Izumi Settsu, Naoe spoke to an ornament vendor and acquired an Intricate Tea Bowl Collection.

In the Kara Market of Obama in Wakasa, Naoe acquired the Elegant Tea Bowl Collection from the ornament vendor.

Naoe visited the city of Azuchi in Omi. Near the Shingu Shrine, Naoe acquired the Sophisticated Tea Bowl Collection.

Naoe visited Sakamoto in the west of Omi, acquring a Unique Tea Bowl Collection from an ornament vendor.

Having acquired all the tea bowls she could get, Naoe returned to Rikyu's house in Kyoto.

  • Sen no Rikyu: Most excellent examples of wabi. It will be a delight to serve new guests with these. Join me for the first ceremony in this teahouse.
  • Naoe: Really? I would be honored.
  • Sen no Rikyu: You may choose the guests. No more than three.
  • Naoe: I want to bring my friends. We could use a moment of peace.

Naoe hands over a list of friends she'd like to invite.

  • Sen no Rikyu: So be it. I shall send a messenger.

Some time later, Naoe attends the tea ceremony with Yasuke, Sorin and Junjiro. Rikyu gives a speech while holding on to a bowl of tea.

  • Sen no Rikyu: Like water takes on the harmonious flavor of leaves, may the spirit of friendship infuse every meeting in this teahouse All. are welcome. From the very small...
  • Junjiro: [giggles]

Rikyu turned to look at Yasuke.

  • Sen no Rikyu: ... to the most tall. Perhaps my next teahouse could be a bit larger.
  • Naoe: [giggles]

Outcome

Naoe recovered bowls for Sen no Rikyu for his friend's teahouse.

Behind the scenes

In non-canon mode, Naoe can invite three enemies instead of allies to the teahouse, which potentially can be either The Iron Hand of the Iron Hand Guild, the corrupt daikan Endo Riku, or the Nobunaga betrayer Sato Katsubei. This leads to the memory Fish in a Barrel, where Naoe can assassinate the potential guest on the spot. Doing so will invite the wrath of Rikyu who scolds Naoe and demands her to leave.
