The Godless Harvest was a virtual representation of one of Fujibayashi Naoe's genetic memories, relived through the Animus EGO.[1]
Description[edit | edit source]
Naoe and Gennojo start their plan to steal rice from the storage of Nijo Palace.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Naoe met Gennojo at a shop outside the Nijo Palace in Kyoto.
- Gennojo: This is it. The castle I was working on when Tatsugoro killed my parents.
- Naoe: Where did the scroll say the rice was?
- Gennojo: Didn't say specifically. Only that it was here.
- Naoe: Let's find it then. And be quiet.
Naoe entered the palace and headed to the northern part of the castle, where she and Gennojo found a storage warehouse. At that moment, Genno noticed a statue of the Buddhist goddess Kannon nearby and approached it.
- Gennojo: Kannon.
He angrily gave it a punch just as Naoe heard his shout.
- Gennojo: (roars)
- Naoe: What are you doing?
- Gennojo: Stupid Kannon. My parents prayed for a kid over and over. And who'd they get? I was her blessing. A piece of shit like me. And then compassionate Kannon never came back. Starve, she said! Die! See if I care.
- Naoe: We need to get moving.
- Gennojo: Kannon was nowhere when Tatsugoro killed my parents.
- Tatsugoro: I am not the reason why your parents are dead.
Tatsugoro, the samurai and Gennojo's target, made his appearance.
- Tatsugoro: You failed to mention how I caught you stealing my katana.
- Gennojo: You killed them!
- Tatsugoro: Their land was forfeited and their lives were lost the moment you stole from me.
- Gennojo: But I was punished!
- Tatsugoro: Building the castle for Lord Nobunaga was an honor. Not a punishment.
- Gennojo: Shut up!
- Tatsugoro: For everything you have stolen, for all the disrespect you have shown. It was my honor to make sure another like you could never be born.
- Naoe: Don't listen to him!
- Tatsugoro: Kannon did not bless your parents with you. She cursed them.
Offended by Tatsugoro's words, Gennojo prepared to step forward and face his nemesis but was interrupted by Naoe.
- Naoe: Wait! Stop!
- Gennojo: Get out of my way!
- Naoe: I'll deal with him. Find the rice. Go! Trust me.
While Gennojo left to find the rice, Naoe confronted and fought against Tatsugoro.
- Tatsugoro: Gennojo deserves to die. Shinobi and thieves are nothing but filthy rats. When I'm done with you and the thief, I'm going to burn his village to the ground!
Despite Tatsugoro summoning reinforcements, Naoe was able to kill all of them, including the samurai himself. Naoe then saw Gennojo standing in front of the storehouse with a bomb in his hand and noticed he had planted explosive jars inside.
- Naoe: Gennojo! Stop!
- Gennojo: Why? My parents' hopes and prayers. Peasants breaking their backs... for what? All as tiny and insignificant as a single grain of rice. Means nothing.
- Naoe: A single grain, maybe, but it's nourishment. It keeps us going. It's hope.
- Gennojo: Not when they take it away from us. They hoard it. And fighting back just makes it worse. I'm done...fighting.
- Naoe: Torching the rice isn't the answer. You won't punish the corrupt, you'll starve the poor!
- Gennojo: You saw those villagers, they hate me. We give them the rice, these bastards will just take it back. Pointless.
Everything is corrupt. Corruption made me, corruption put my mother's head on a pike. So I'll burn it all. And if the flames take me with them? Good.
Naoe had no answer to Gennojo's words. Gennojo then entered the storehouse.
- Gennojo: See? This is the best thing. The samurai will be ruined, the poor will rise up, and I will be gone.
Gennojo dropped the bomb which exploded, destroying the storehouse and killing himself.
- Naoe: Gennojo!
Naoe was too late to stop his suicide attack, and could only cried out for his death. As there was nothing else for her to do, Naoe left the complex and took a last peek at the palace, still saddened by Gennojo's death.
- Naoe: (sighs)
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Naoe and Gennojo located the storehouse containing the province's grain supplies. Despite killing Tatsugoro, Gennojo, who had been broken due to Tatsugoro's speech, his parent's death and villagers rejection of him, committed suicide by blowing himself and the storage up.
