Silica (Silicon dioxide) is a chemical element and a common material found all across Earth.
During the Isu Era, silica was mined primarily from Mylnas. In its natural state, silica is a greenish blue crystal, but through the use of a silica-enriching device, the Isu were able to store energy within the crystals, turning them a golden yellow color. The crystals were then able to power many different devices, like pedestals within vaults and personal weapons such as the Hugr-Rip.
History

At the time of the invasion of Svartálfaheimr, the Muspel warlord Surtr seized control of several Mylnas across the land, aiming to collect enough silica crystals to power the incomplete tower built in the city of Eitri. He enslaved the local dwarves, demanding they triple their silica production, and enforced this with the help of his children Eysa and Glöð.[1]

In Egypt during the reign of Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII, silica was used as a decorative ornament. The glass-like shards possessed an "eerie feeling" due to their retained charge, and were primarily collected and used by the Medjay Bayek of Siwa to activate pedestals in various Isu vaults connected to certain tombs in the country. Bayek collected 50 pieces of silica to recover a set of Isu Armor in the vault Eesfet Oon-m'Aa Poo beneath the Great Sphinx of Giza.[2] The Order of the Ancients member Khaliset also gathered them, mistakenly believing they could help resurrect her daughter, Eshe.[3]
Centuries later in the 9th century, during the Viking expansion to England, Eivor Varinsdottir relived the life of Odin through a drug infused dream. In these dreams, Odin came across several reflectors made from silica in both Asgard, Jötunheimr,[4] and Svartálfaheimr.[1] She later herself encountered a form of the reflectors within the Cave of Gold while aiding Kassandra to save the people of the Isle of Skye.[5]
Usage
Silica's ability to store energy was a key component in many Isu devices. In perhaps its most prominent example of this property, it could be used to help upgrade the Hugr-Rip, unlocking more powers for Odin to use and extending the duration of the abilities he already had. The Isu inventor Muuri later discovered that silica tended to expand when infused with enough energy after successfully making a crystal double in size before it grew exponentially and broke through the roof of his house.[1]
Pure silica crystals were used as lenses within reflectors, diverting light beams like a magnifying glass to power doors and other devices across the Isu lands such as in the Mímisbrunnr[6] and the Cave of Gold.[5] Due to its refracting properties, it could also be polished and used as lenses for glasses to help Isu with various vision problems.
