The American Civil War (1861 – 1865) was an armed military conflict in the United States of America. The war began when eleven Southern states elected to secede from the rest of the country in 1861 to form the Confederate States of America for multiple reasons, primarily over the issue of states' rights to implement and perpetuate slavery, while the northern states formed together into the Union. The war ended four years later with the victory of the Northern states.
Another factor that led to the conflict was the Templars' political influence, as the American Rite's Grand Master William M. Tweed was manipulating the Confederate States and hoped to gain more control over American politics in the wake of the war.[1]
In 1863, the American Assassins' Mentor tasked the Assassin Varius with stealing a Dagger of Eden and delivering it to the Union general Ulysses S. Grant. After retrieving the Dagger, Varius trained a young Assassin named Eliza, who successfully delivered it to Grant.[1]
Although the Assassins largely collaborated with their allies on the Union side,[1] they also had their contacts within the Confederate States. In 2016, Callum Lynch was noted to have an Assassin ancestor who fought on the Confederate side during the war.[2]
Eventually, the war culminated with the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln after the war's end by the Templar-affiliated John Wilkes Booth, who in turn was tracked down and killed by Assassins.[3]
The American Civil War was a point of interest for the Animus Project, and a number of Subjects chosen for it, including Clay Kaczmarek[4] and Desmond Miles, had ancestors who had participated in the conflict. Additionally, Abstergo Entertainment's supervisor Melanie Lemay also had a great-great-grandfather who was known to have come into contact with Lincoln a number of times as a Union soldier during the conflict.[5]
