Major-General Arthur St. Clair (1737 – 1818)[1] was a Scottish-American soldier and politician, as well as a member of the Colonial Templars.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Formerly part of the British Army during the Seven Years' War, St. Clair became major general of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and later served as President of the Continental Congress, before becoming governor of the Northwest Territory in 1788. In 1791, St. Clair led the American military in an attempt to conquer the Northwest Territory at a battle at the Wabash River, leading to the the loss of almost 1,000 men and the worst defeat ever recorded at the hands of Native Americans, a feat that became widely known as "St. Clair's Defeat".[2]

Having obtained intelligence through his Templar connections that the Miami Chief Mihšihkinaahkwa possessed an Apple of Eden, St. Clair pushed for an attack, despite the Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton leading a Miami, Shawnee, and Lenape coalition in attempting to parley. Though he had prepared an ambush thanks to information from a Shawnee spy, St. Clair was surprised by the Natives attacking the army in the middle of their morning meal, Mihšihkinaahkwa having apparently decided against waiting for the diplomatic group's return. Being quickly overwhelmed, St. Clair retreated to Fort Jefferson and commanded a soldier to stay and gather St. Clair's belongings, only for the Native Americans to enter his tent and steal his research.[2]
