Alexandra Feodorovna
Alexandra Feodorovna (née Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine, 1872 – 1918) was the wife of Tsar Nicholas II and the last Empress of Russia from 1894 until her husband's forced abdication in 1917. She was the mother of Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and of the Tsesarevich Alexei.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
After Alexei became sick from hemophilia, a family friend advised them to ask for the help of Grigori Rasputin. After successfully "healing" Alexei, Rasputin became a trusted friend, and even gave advice on the decisions the royal family made.[2] He would continue to hold influence over Alexandra and Nicholas until his assassination in 1916.[3]
The outbreak of the Russian Revolution the following year led to the end of the Tsarist regime and by 1918, Alexandra and her family had been put under house arrest in Yekaterinburg.[4] On the night of 17 July, the former Tsarina and her family were taken to the basement of Ipatiev House by Templars who planned to executing them and steal the family's Precursor box. Alexandra and her husband were the first victims, per the orders of Yakov Sverdlov.[5] After the massacre of the imperial family, Anastasia, who had escaped and became the only survivor, retrieved one of Alexandra's bracelets while escaping Ipatiev House. The bracelet had been engraved with the initials of their family members.[6]
