Second Messenian War
The Second Messenian War (640-620 BCE) was a war between the Greek states of Messenia and Sparta, started around 40 years after the end of the First Messenian War with the uprising of a slave rebellion.[1]
Over time, Sparta started encroaching on the territory of Messenia, eventually leading to war.[2] Through bribery and military might, Sparta was able to crush the Messenians and re-establish their helot status.[1]
Sparta gained more land in this conflict, which they divided between their citizens and the perioikoi. The aftermath of the war then divided the Spartan population into three groups: the homoioi, the perioikoi, and the helots. The helots of Lakonia mostly respected Sparta's rule, and did not cause much trouble. However, helots from Messenia supposedly resisted the Spartans, although sources can only confirm one revolt for certain, in Messenia in 464 BCE.[2]
