Hippias (c. 547 BCE – c. 490 BCE) was one of the last tyrant of Athens.

The son of the tyrant Peisistratos, Hippias succeeded his father in 528 BCE. During his reign, Athens was considered peaceful and prosperous. However, an invasion of Attika by the Spartans in 510 BCE led to his downful and he was exiled.[1]

Hippias fled to Persia where he was received by King Darius I. When Darius planned an invasion of Greece, Hippias convinced the king to land his forces in Marathon.[1] Despite his recommendation, the Persians suffered a crushing defeat at the Battle of Marathon.[2]
