Gaia, also spelled Gaea, is the Greek personification of the earth, the Mother Earth. She is considered a primordial deity, mother to all living things, with the Olympian pantheon counting her in their ancestry. Her Roman counterpart was Terra.

History

In the myths, Gaia was the first possessor of the Oracle of Delphi, before granting it to the Titan Themis, who in turn passed it onto the god Apollo after he slew the Python. Gaia gave birth to the Titans, the hundred-armed Hecatonchires and the one-eyed Cyclopes, but her husband Uranus banished the later two to Tartarus because he found them ugly. Enraged, she forged a sickle made of flint and asked her Titan children to take revenge on Uranus. Only Kronos was brave enough to take the sickle and he used it to defeat Uranus and castrate him, throwing his testicles into the sea which would later give birth to Aphrodite.
