João was already dead, stabbed by Hidden Blade. It's a dying guard who initiates gunpowder suicide. But how canonical is this if it's an example play scenario?

Biography

The enclosed content is of ambiguous canonicity.

In 1543, João was on one of Wang Zhi's pirate ships trafficking arquebuses between China and Japan. As the ship was leaving Fukue Island, Japan it was boarded by members of the Chinese Brotherhood of Assassins led by Shao Jun. Hurriedly trying to secure an Apple of Eden in his possession, he was targeted by Shao Jun as the pirates and arquebusiers were dealt with by the other Assassins including The Sunlight Sword. Incapacitated by her Machado lost possession of the Apple. However a dying gunman managed to light a store of gunpowder forcing everyone to disengage.[1]

Having survived the previous engagement João Machado now a commander within the Military Order of Aviz was tasked to acquire a Precursor Box from fellow Templar Francis Xavier, by force if necessary. Lethally completing said mission, he made arrangements to deliver it to his master, Gaspar Vilela, in Nagasaki, Japan. However during transit aboard one of the Black Ship an attack by pirates gave Assassins again led by Shao Jun who had stowed away the chance to recover the Precursor Box.[2]
