Gaspar Vilela (1526 – 1572) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary and a member of the Military Order of Aviz. He was also a member of the Templar Order and was responsible for influencing the Portuguese and Christian presence in Japan.
Biography
During his mission in Japan, he was accompanied by his right hand, the priest João Machado. In 1558, João was assassinated in Owari Province by the Japanese Assassin Akira, a ronin who lent his services to the daimyo Oda Nobunaga. Gaspar, who was not present, was spared from this fate.[1]
