The American Civil War was an armed military conflict in the United States of America that lasted from 1861 to 1865. Although the war began in 1861, it was the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 that caused seven southern states to secede and form the Confederate States of America; which resulted in four more states joining them. The war ended in 1865 with the Union claiming victory while the Confederates surrendered. Overall, the conflict was the costliest and deadliest war fought on American soil with 620,000 soldiers killed, millions more injured, and much of the South in ruins.

Several causes were contributing factors of the war, but most people agree the war was a mixture of simmering tensions between northern and southern states over slavery, states’ rights, and westward expansion. Over tthe course of the war, the division felt by the general public eventually culminated with the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln after the war's end by the Templar-affiliated John Wilkes Booth, who in turn was tracked down and killed by Assassins.

The American Civil War was a point of interest for the Animus Project, and a number of Subjects chosen for it, including Clay Kaczmarek and Desmond Miles, had ancestors who had participated in the conflict. Additionally, Abstergo Entertainment supervisor Melanie Lemay also had a great-great-grandfather who was known to have come into contact with Lincoln a number of times as a Union soldier during the conflict.

The Assassin Varius, lived in New York City during the civil war. In 1863, the mentor tasked Varius to steal a Dagger of Eden and handed it to General Ulysses S. Grant, the dagger managed to reach General Grant.
