Gaspar Vilela (1526 – 1572) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary and a member of the Military Order of Aviz. He was also a member of the Templar Order and was responsible for influencing the Portuguese and Christian presence in Japan.

Biography

During his mission in Japan, Gaspar was accompanied by the priest João Machado, a fellow Templar who served as his right-hand. In 1558, the Japanese Assassin and rōnin Akira assassinated João in Owari Province, though Gaspar was spared this fate due to not being present at the time.[1]
