At the entrance to the Path of Serenity, Naoe and Yasuke found the yamabushi Genpaku standing next to a shrine. As they approached him, the monk freaked out and took a guarded stance.
"Genpaku:'Step no closer, stranger. I am no imposter.
Naoe and Yasuke approached and spoke to him regardless.
Genpaku:Don't hurt me, please!
Naoe:What? I wouldn't hurt you.
Yasuke:What? I would not hurt you.
Genpaku:I am Genpaku. A true Yamabushi. You have not seen them, then. The imposters.
Genpaku:Yoshiharu may be short-tempered, but I am glad he sent you my way. How is he?
Naoe:Both he and Murasaki are safe. But on the road, they were attacked by someone pretending to be a Yamabushi.
Yasuke:Imposters? My ally, Naoe, met your brother.
Genpaku:Yoshiharu?
Yasuke:Yes, in Iga. They spoke of you.
Genpaku:Yoshiharu may be short-tempered, but I am glad he sent you my way. How is he?
Yasuke:Both he and his granddaughter are safe. But on the road, they were attacked by someone pretending to be a Yamabushi.
Naoe/Yasuke:What do you mean "them?"
Genpaku:Suddenly rumours of murderous monks are everywhere. True Yamabushi are ascetic wanderers. We shirk earthly pleasures to connect deeply with nature. It is our practice. Accomplished Yamabushi exorcise evil spirits. We are healers.
Naoe/Yasuke:So these imposters not only give a bad name to your practice, they harm others.
Genpaku:They wear our robes as costumes. A cover to attack unsuspecting innocents. Stop them. Bring peace to our mountains again.
Naoe:I've already dealt with some of these imposters, but I'll search for the rest. To protect the path of the true Yamabushi.
Yasuke:I've already dealt with some of these imposters. I will search for the rest. To protect the path of the true Yamabushi.
Yasuke:I will look for these imposters, Genpaku. Your mountains will be peaceful again.
Genpaku:Thank you. These men cannot be allowed to spread harm and suffering under the guise of Yamabushi.
Naoe and Yasuke traveled to the town of Shingū in eastern Kii. By the shore, they found the yamabushi imposter.
Naoe/Yasuke:A traveling Yamabushi... With a weapon? He is one of the imposters I've been searching for.
Yamabushi:Come, my fellow wanderers! Cross my path and see what happens! Come! Join my list of death!
The two confronted and attacked the imposter.
After a fight, Naoe eliminated him, putting an end to his violent antics.
Yamabushi:Ah, Sir Yasuke! An honor. I hope you aren't here to steal my kills or we'll have trouble!
After a fight, Yasuke put an end to the imposter's antics.
Naoe and Yasuke then headed north to eastern coast of Kii and found a trail off the main road leading up the mountain's cliffside. They overheard a pair of children talking about an attack by a yamabushi.
Child 1:A Yamabushi attacked my brother! On the way to the shrine! He... he ran away up the cliffside. Climbing and leaping like a monkey!
Child 2:You're telling stories.
Child 1:Am not! I can show you my brother's bloody bandages.
Child 2:Gross! Okay, show me.
Naoe navigated her way up the trees and fallen tree logs, reaching the cliffside. Inside a small cavern, she found a body.
Naoe:Another victim of this imposter.
She continued climbing up and found a body of a yamabushi lying next to small hole accessible by proning.
Naoe:More bodies. The people deserve better.
Naoe continued and climbing and eventually reached an open area. She also assisted Yasuke in reaching the area, and the two spotted an unknown individual at a camp.
Naoe:Looks like I'm not the only one on the trail today.
Naoe confronted the imposter, who soon attacked her.
Yamabushi:Takes a lot to get all the way up here. I'll hang your corpse somewhere special.
Yasuke:It looks like I'm not the only one on the trail today.
Yasuke confronted the imposter.
Yamabushi:You may be on our side, but you're not one of us. Leave my hunting grounds or be hunted yourself, samurai.
Yasuke ignored his words and attacked him.
Yamabushi:For Lord Nobunaga! Death to Igans and all and all and all!
Naoe/Yasuke:What?
Clifftop Yamabushi:Die!
After an intense fight, Naoe and Yasuke eliminated the Clifftop Yamabushi.
Naoe:That man was deranged. How long has he been out here, hunting people? How long has he been alone? And he said, "For Lord Nobunaga."
Naoe:Another Yamabushi imposter with that name on his breath.
Yasuke:Another Yamabushi imposter with my lord's name on his lips.
Naoe and Yasuke traveled to Mount Hiei in Omi to track down the last imposter. Passing by a pond, they overheard a couple talking.
Man:I went to meditate on the mountain near the shrine, and I felt like I was being hunted.
Woman:Your mind was wandering.
Man:No! I felt it. Like something was lurking in the shadows. Waiting for me.
Naoe and Yasuke went pass the pond and up the mountain finding a meditation spot near a shrine. Naoe sat down and performed her kuji-kiri. Halfway through, she felt an approaching presence from behind. Just as an individual swung his blade, Naoe dodged and found herself confronted by the yamabushi imposter. Yasuke joined her in defeating and eliminated the enemy, recovering a note from his body.
Letter Found on a Yamabushi Imposter
Sir,
That sneaky bastard ran me off my hunting grounds along the path to Nyu-Daimyojin Shrine, but I've found a new area and I'm going strong. People are easy to kill when distracted.
I will not abandom my mission, sir. Never. Never. Never.
For Lord Nobunaga.
(Below the note text, there are 17 rough-drawn slash marks.)
Naoe:An unsent message. This must've been another letter for the man I found in Mibuno Vale. The one becoming a sokushinbutsu. And these slash marks at the bottom. Counting kills of innocents like it were sport.
Yasuke:An unsent message. This must have been another letter for the man I found in Mibuno Vale. The one becoming a sokushinbutsu. And these slash marks at the bottom. Counting kills of innocents like it were sport.
Naoe/Yasuke:It is over. I should return to Genpaku and let him know the imposters have been dispatched.
Naoe and Yasuke returned to Genpaku near the Path of Serenity.
Genpaku:You have returned.
They spoke to him.
Genpaku:Yes? Go on.
Naoe/Yasuke:I have eliminated the Yamabushi imposters. All of them. Your mountain paths are safe for passage.
Genpaku:But who were they? Surely we did them no harm.
Naoe:I think they were a former group of Lord Nobunaga's soldiers. A secret force in disguise, sent to hunt fleeing Igans. But... time, war, and solitude drove them mad, and their mission became even darker. Everyone began to look like an enemy.
Yasuke:I think they were a former group of Lord Nobunaga's soldiers. A secret force in disguise, sent to hunt fleeing Igans. But... time, war, and solitude drove them mad, their mission became even darker. Everyone began to look like an enemy.
Genpaku:War has pushed us all to the brink, hasn't it? I myself sought this life, one of extremes, to find purpose. Though I do not forgive, I can understand. A seed of zealotry planted in the soil of isolation grows a dangerous vine.
Outcome
Naoe and Yasuke assisted Genpaku in eliminating the yamabushi imposters, clearing their name of their violent deeds.
