I wanted to ask you something. Which is... what's your name?
This article title is conjecture. Although the article subject is canon, no official name for it has been given.

In October 2017, Simon Hathaway, head of the Historical Research Division of Abstergo Industries, sent Layla Hassan and Deanna Geary to Egypt on a mission to retrieve an artifact of great value. However, after Layla failed to maintain regular contact with Abstergo, Sigma Team was sent to eliminate both her and Deanna. Only the latter was killed, while Layla fought off her attackers and defected to the Assassins.

Prelude

Since November 2016, Layla Hassan had been urging her superior Simon Hathaway for a bigger assignment, asking for more fieldwork and "Person of Interest" assignments.[1] By December, after Layla had gotten behind on submitting operation reports, Hathaway threatened her with filing a formal complaint to Operations, meaning additional training.[2] Eventually, in October 2017, Layla got her wish for a high-interest fieldwork assignment. Bringing along her colleague and friend Deanna Geary and her portable Animus HR-8, Layla traveled to Egypt to commence her mission.[3]

The mission

―Deanna Gray's final words before being killed.[src]-[m]

While Deanna stayed in a hotel room, Layla rented a jeep and drove to the Hotep Cavern. While there, she needed to change the jeep's tires but only managed to take off the wheel and nothing else. She then set up camp outside the cavern and took her equipment inside. After providing enough light to the area, Layla began her search for the artifact.[4]

During her search, Layla instead found the mummified body of Bayek and, wanting to prove her worth to the Animus Project, took a sample of his DNA and ran it through her Animus. Once the DNA was sequenced, Layla relived Bayek's memories for the first time while Deanna remotely monitored her vitals. After voluntarily desynchronizing, Deanna contacted Layla, urging her to refill on cyclosporine. After taking a short break and refilling on cyclosporine, Layla re-entered the Animus.[4]

Layla finding Aya's mummy

Upon "meeting" Bayek's wife Aya inside the Animus simulation, Layla began to experience the Bleeding Effect and sensed that Aya was also buried nearby. Looking for her sarcophagus in the unexplored areas of the cavern, she performed a Leap of Faith and found the sarcophagus, which had fallen due to a cave-in.[4]

After taking a DNA sample with Aya's Hidden Blade, Layla immediately returned to the Animus to sequence it and tried accessing Aya's memories. However, the DNA took longer to sequence than anticipated, causing Layla minor cognitive disruption. In the meantime, she decided to continue exploring Bayek's memories.[4]

The third time Layla awoke from the Animus was different, with Deanna screaming at her to wake up. Sigma Team had been deployed to silence Layla and Deanna due to their failure to report back to Abstergo, and the agents had arrived at Deanna's hotel room. Hearing an explosion and gunshots, Layla lost contact with Deanna and noticed five Sigma operatives who had arrived at the cavern to eliminate her.[4]

Layla using the Animus HR-8

Thanks to the skills she gained through the Bleeding Effect, Layla quickly dispatched the operatives, who were armed with only bows and arrows, before trying to contact Deanna again. However, she was met with silence, leading her to assume the worst and vow revenge against Abstergo.[4] Unbeknownst to Layla, Deanna had been killed by Sigma Team's leader, the Master Templar Juhani Otso Berg.[5]

Aftermath

Following the mission, the Mentor of the Assassins, William Miles found Layla in the cavern. After threatening the stranger with her Hidden Blade, Layla agreed to hear him out. Explaining that Abstergo would never stop hunting her, William suggested that she join the Assassins for her protection and for an opportunity to work on their own version of the Animus Project. Layla agreed to go with William but declined to join the Assassins,[4] a decision she would rethink nearly a year later.[6]
