Gaspar Vilela (1526 – 1572) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary and a member of the Military Order of Aviz. He was also a member of the Templar Order and was responsible for influencing the Portuguese and Christian presence in Japan.
Biography
During his mission in Japan, Gaspar was accompanied by the priest João Machado, a fellow Templar who served as his right-hand. In 1552, while stationed in Nagasaki he awaited the delivery of a Precursor box looted from fellow Jesuit Francis Xavier,[1] who also belonged to the Templar Order.[2] However, as João Machado and his Knights of Aviz brought it to Vilela aboard one of the Black Ships, they were intercepted by members of the Chinese Brotherhood of Assassins led by Shao Jun.[1]
