Gaspar Vilela (1526 – 1572) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary and a member of the Order of Saint Benedict of Aviz. He was also a member of the Templar Order and was responsible for influencing the Portuguese and Christian presence in Japan.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1552, Vilela dispatched priest João Machado to the Chinese island of Shangchuan to track down[1] their fellow Templar[2] Francis Xavier and the Precursor box he carried. Vilela awaited Machado and the box at Nagasaki, though Assassins led by Shao Jun managed to recover the box before Machado could leave the island.[1]
