The Destruction of the Great Chain was an event during the Renaissance that occurred in the year 1511, of which the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze destroyed the Great Chain across Constantinople's Golden Horn.

After learning of the Janissary Captain Tarik Barleti's plan to ambush the Byzantine Templars in their home territory of Cappadocia, the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze planned to continue Tarik's ploy by meeting with his spies.
This allowed Ezio to depart from the city, and journey to the Byzantine Templars' headquarters of Derinkuyu.

Suleiman chartered a ship for Ezio, however before he was able to depart, he learned that the Ottoman Janissaries had raised the Golden Horn's Great Chain, preventing any ships from leaving, vowing to keep it raised until the Assassin was caught. With the assistance of Yusuf Tazim, Ezio was able to destroy the chain, and journey to Cappadocia.

After leaving Topkapı Palace, Ezio headed for the harbor of the Golden Horn. On that way there, he was greeted by Yusuf Tazim, who had just heard news of Ezio's departure. Yusuf informed him of the Great Chain being raised due to Tarik's murder, and that it will not be lowered until the assassin, Ezio, was caught.

In order to aid Ezio with bringing down the Chain, Yusuf handed Ezio a bomb fifty times stronger than their regular explosives, for use in destroying the Great Chain. Ezio informed Yusuf that he knew what to do, which prompted Yusuf to leave him to handle it.
Once at the vessel, Ezio eliminated several guards and made his way to a Greek Fire spray nozzle situated on the bow of the ship. Before leaving, Ezio asked Yusuf to watch over Sofia Sartor, his love interest, and protect her from any harm that may come her way. After being assured by Yusuf that he will, Ezio left for the harbor.

Ezio quickly arrived at one of the Chain's ends, and placed the bomb handed to him by Yusuf there. With his pistol, Ezio shot the bomb, which destroyed the tower holding the Chain in place, thus releasing the Chain into the water. With tower in ruins and the Chain released, Ezio utilized a zipline to get on board a warship. As he did, several of the Ottoman guards tried to detain him. Though before the Ottomans had the chance to apprehend Ezio, Yusuf and several of the Assassin apprentices arrived to stop them.

As the Assassins prevented the soldiers from capturing Ezio, Yusuf informed him of armed boats trying to stop his departure, and that he should deal with them. Arriving at the foot of the warship, Ezio found a mounted Greek Fire and used it to set the ships on fire, destroying them.

As the Assassins left the ship, Ezio made his way through the burning ships. After traversing through the remains of several ships, Ezio encountered several Ottomans trying to sate the fire, who then noticed Ezio. "The Janissaries have raised the chain across the mouth of the Haliç (Golden Horn) and ordered a full blockade until you are caught."
―Yusuf Tazim to Ezio Auditore.[src]-[m]

The Destruction of the Great Chain was an event during the Renaissance that occurred in the year 1511, of which the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze destroyed the Great Chain across Constantinople's Golden Horn.

This allowed Ezio to depart from the city, and journey to the Byzantine Templars' headquarters of Derinkuyu.

Destruction and escape[edit | edit source]

"Those ships are armed. They're waiting to stop your boat. You take care of them. We will clear the docks."
―Yusuf informing Ezio of the fleet obstructing the Golden Horn, 1511.[src]-[m]

Following his meeting with Yusuf, Ezio made his way to one of the towers that the Great Chain was anchored to. Surreptitiously maneuvering past the alert Janissaries, Ezio placed the bomb on one of the tower's windows. Triggering the explosive by shooting it with his Hidden Gun, Ezio cautiously observed as the tower gave way, pulling the Great Chain along with it.[1]

With the Great Chain sunk, Ezio scrambled across a zipline, reaching a ship stationed at the Golden Horn. Meanwhile, Yusuf and his Assassins aided Ezio by eliminating the guards on the docks.[1]

Once at the vessel, Ezio eliminated several guards and made his way to a Greek Fire spray nozzle situated on the bow of the ship. Utilizing the Greek Fire, Ezio destroyed the fleet and the riflemen obstructing his departure from the Golden Horn. With the entire waterway engulfed in flames, Ezio left the weapon, and carefully navigated across the ignited ships.[1]

After an arduous venture through the incinerated vessels on the waterway, Ezio ultimately arrived at his own ship. Greeted sardonically by fellow Assassin and captain of the ship, Piri Reis, Ezio apologized for the impediment. With their route to Cappadocia unobstructed, the vessel began navigating the waters of the Golden Horn.[1]

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

Subsequent to the Great Chain's destruction, the Ottoman navy was crippled from the destruction and incineration. Upon arriving at Derinkuyu, Ezio made his way inside the city, and met with one of Tarik Barleti's Ottoman spies, Dilara.

Another Assassin, Murat Bin Husn, who's also a Janissary.[2] Fearing for their lives, Murat and his family fled from the city.[3]
