Alonso Carlo was a freed slave and translator for the Spanish Empire's colonial army. In 1494, Alonso adopted Miguel Ramón Carlo de Lugo as his son after Miguel was abandoned by his father. In 1510, the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León accused Alonso of plotting his assassination and ordered that he be hanged. Alonso took Miguel and escaped before he could be captured, eventually finding shelter with an early incarnation of the Caribbean Brotherhood of Assassins in Florida.[1]
