The Battle of Toba-Fushimi (鳥羽・伏見の戦い) occurred between the Imperial and Tokugawa forces during the Boshin War in Japan. The battle started on 27 January 1868, when the forces of Choshu, Satsuma, and Tosa Domains clashed near Fushimi, a village located near Kyoto. The battle lasted for four days, ending in a decisive victory for the Imperial forces.

The Shiba family took part in the battle, with Atsuko disguising herself as a man to join an ashigaru battalion from the feudal domain of Aizu, while her father Tanomo participated in the fight and her brother Ibuka fled from the battlefield.[1] The death of Tanomo during the battle broke the bond between the Shiba siblings, with Atsuko vowing never to speak or see Ibuka ever again.[2]
