From Spark to Flame
From Spark to Flame was a virtual representation of one of Fujibayashi Naoe's genetic memories, relived through the Animus EGO.[1]
Description[edit | edit source]
Naoe returned to Tomiko's home after several months after her recovery.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
- Naoe: I was on that mountain for so long. Feels strange to leave it.
Naoe left the mountain and got on her horse Kirin and then made her way to Tomiko's home. Along the way, she found three ashigaru harassing a peasant.
- Peasant: I meant no harm.
- Ashigaru Spearman: We should slice your belly open for the insult alone.
- Ashigaru Swordsman: (laughs)
- Naoe: Oda's ashigaru. I can't let this stand.
Naoe stepped and killed the soldiers before continuing on. After sometime, she reached the outskirts of the estate.
- Naoe: The last time I was here... everything was different. Father was alive. I only hope Tomiko's all right.
Naoe headed inside the homestead. After passing some fields and going up the stairs, she found Tomiko tending to a bush.
- Naoe: Tomiko...
Naoe approached Tomiko from behind.
- Naoe: Tomiko.
Recognizing the voice, Tomiko stood up and turned around to meet Naoe.
- Tomiko: Naoe! And Nagato?
Naoe shook her head.
- Tomiko: Come. I'll pour sake.

Tomiko led Naoe inside the house. They sat down and Naoe was offered a cup of sake, which she accepted and drank.
- Tomiko: May his spirit find peace.
Tomiko herself took a cup as well.
- Naoe: Father.
They placed their empty cups down. Tomiko got up to take another bottle.
- Naoe: I only wish I had seen their faces. Cowards, all of them.
- Tomiko: What do you mean?
- Naoe: That night. The masked samurai. There are eleven more. They killed my father. The Onryo.
- Tomiko: The masked man from Katano. I should have known he wasn't just some mad ronin. So there's more than one.

Naoe took out a scroll on which she had drawn all twelve members of the ground and rolled it out on the table.
- Naoe: Many more.
Tomiko returned to the table to look through with her.
- Tomiko: They killed Nagato? You'll have to kill them all. Do you understand? Not just those that wear masks, but the people that surround them. The power that commands them.
- Naoe: I will not hesitate.
- Tomiko: Good. It's the only way to set things right. Blood for blood.
- Naoe: Blood for blood.
- Tomiko: You will need much, then. Allies, supplies...
Tomiko got up.
- Naoe: And a place to put them.
She headed towards the door and opened it, taking a look of her surrounding land.
- Tomiko: It's yours. Anything.
- Naoe: Are you sure?
- Tomiko: Did your father ever tell you why my bones ache in the weather? Why my strength fades so quickly?
- Naoe: No.
- Tomiko: War. Years ago. Between daimyo whose faces I'd never seen. Powerful men who fought to rule my land, but never set foot in it. Their soldiers killed everyone. My family, neighbors. Left my mangled body in the dirt. Left me to burn as our fields turned to ash.
Tomiko turned back and returned to Naoe.
- Naoe: But why? You weren't the enemy.
- Tomiko: We were in the way. The last thing I heard, after my husband's screams fell silent... was laughter. Our lives meant nothing. These people don't care about us. So every scrap I have in this world is yours, Naoe. As long as you promise to make them suffer.
- Naoe: I'll have to make changes to the place...
- Tomiko: Then it is time to start gathering supplies.
Naoe left the house to gather resources which were stashed near the stable. She first gathered the stacks of wood.
- Naoe: This should be enough for the walls.
She then gathered the stone.
- Naoe: That's enough stone.
She then headed down to gather stacks of hay near the river.
- Naoe: This will build a strong roof. Time to build, I guess.
She then returned to the hiroma to look at the hideout plans, and chose to build a kakurega. Naoe and Tomiko then hanged Naoe's drawing of The Onryo in the hiroma. Just then, they heard sounds coming outside. Tomiko took out a knife as she and Naoe approached to the entrance to see the commotion. Naoe opened the door to find Sorin and Junjiro outside.
- Naoe: Junjiro? Sorin?
They first greeted one another by bowing.
- Sorin: (clears throat) My apologies for our unannounced arrival.
- Junjiro: I've come to stay with you!
- Naoe: What?
- Tomiko: What?
- Sorin: I had thought I was doing some good by staying at Makinoodera. But your fiery spirit showed me that, in truth... I was hiding. Sinking my roots too deep in the mountain soil.
- Naoe: But where will you go? What will you do?
- Sorin: A pilgrimage, I think. A slow one, if these old bones have any say.
- Junjiro: And I've come to stay with you!
- Sorin: He hasn't ceased talking about you since the moment you left.
- Junjiro: Please? I'll help! I can cook, do chores, feed the horses...
Tomiko turned to look at Naoe, wondering what decision she will make.
- Naoe: This isn't some temple, hidden in the mountains. It isn't safe here.
- Sorin: It isn't safe anywhere. But the boy wants to be with you.
- Naoe: (sighs) Fine. I'll take care of him.
- Junjiro: Yatta! (Hurray!)
Junjiro quickly ran inside the hiroma.
- Tomiko: So we're taking in strays now, are we?
- Naoe: You were the one who said we needed allies. Think of Junjiro as our first recruit.
The two noticed Junjiro messing around, causing Tomiko to step in.
- Tomiko: Don't touch that.
- Junjiro: Sorry!
Meanwhile, Naoe turned to speak to Sorin, worried for him now that he no longer have Junjiro by his side.
- Naoe: Will you be all right?
- Sorin: You don't believe me capable of a pilgrimage then?
- Naoe: I guess you've proven me wrong before.
- Sorin: Do take care of him. You two are more alike than you know.
The two bid farewell with a bow. Sorin then took his leave. Sometime later, Naoe and Tomiko returned to look at Naoe's drawing to discuss the Onryo.
- Tomiko: What is this, here? This mark?
Tomiko pointed at one of the Onryo who was clutching his ear.
- Naoe: That one was wounded. My father sliced off his ear in the melee.
- Tomiko: There's a man in Sakai rumoured to have lost an ear some months ago. I hear his men have clashed with Kyonyo and his monks at a temple, somewhere in southeast Settsu.
- Naoe: Monks?
- Tomiko: Survivors from Honganji. The Ikko ikki. Kyonyo is their leader now. Maybe he could give you information.
- Naoe: Anything else?
The two looked at the Onryo holding a teppo.
- Tomiko: The teppo. What are those etchings?
- Naoe: Gold, I think. Even in the moonlight alone, I could still see them. Never knew a teppo could shine like that.
- Tomiko: Then you've never been to the markets of Sakai. The craftsmen there are like none other. Someone in Sakai will lead you to this gun. Follow your instincts. Sakai is a big city, Naoe. Full of danger, yes, but also allies. Eyes open for those who might help our cause.
- Naoe: Right.
- Tomiko: And, if you're near the blacksmith shops, find Heiji. Looks like a bear, forges like a master. He owes me a favor.
- Naoe: I will track down who we're looking for. Wherever they're hiding.
Naoe gave Tomiko a nod before leaving to track down the Onryo.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Tomiko lent her homestead to Naoe to establish a hideout where they can build up to combat against the killers of Naoe's father. After being joined by Junjiro, they worked towards identifying two members of the group, who were most likely based in Sakai.
