Out of the Shadows was a virtual representation of one of Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke's genetic memories, relived through the Animus EGO.

Description

Naoe and Yasuke returns to the Hideout after having concluded each of their vendetta.

Dialogue

Naoe and Yasuke approached Tomiko.

• Tomiko: Ah, you've returned.
• Tomiko: Both of you.
• Naoe: It's strange. To feel this way. Done.
• Tomiko: You're not dead. Your work is done, but you are very much still here. Celebrate. Breathe. Rest. There will be time for more work later.
• Yasuke: But what is my work? Protecting daimyo? Fighting battles that are not my own?
• Tomiko: It is the work of living. Building a life and harvesting the fruit. There will always be people in need. You are one of them now. Take care of yourself.
• Yasuke: Thank you. It is good advice.
• Naoe: I hope you'll take it too.
• Tomiko: Ha. Point taken. You and Yasuke should take a moment to speak with the others. They will be pleased to see you back healthy and whole.
• Naoe: What do you think? Do you want to talk to the others, or should I?

• Yasuke: You go ahead. I will speak with them later.

• Naoe: Hey.
• Yasuke: It has been a long journey, my friend.
• Naoe: It's a lot, isn't it? How much we've seen and done together.
• Yasuke: Together. And apart. There are things I have done that I've yet to reconcile.
• Naoe: Why didn't you tell me? My rage, my reasons... they were plain. If you'd told me more, I could have helped.
• Yasuke: It is not like that, Naoe.
• Naoe: Then what is it like?
• Yasuke: When the Shinbakufu killed your father... you knew you would hunt them down. You were driven. Focused. You knew you would find them and bring them to justice.
• Naoe: Yes.
• Yasuke: For me, for the men who wronged me... I never thought I would see them again. Except for in my nightmares. So when I came to this place, I... buried it all. I rebuilt myself through strength and service. Until...
• Naoe: Until you found them. Here.
• Yasuke: It is its own kind of would, to have pain unearthed like that. So suddenly. As quick as the blade you wear around your wrist. The depth of my anger surprised me. And now, the void that it has left behind.
• Naoe: I know how you feel. But that space... When the rage leaves, it makes room for something else.
• Yasuke: What?
• Naoe: That's for you to decide.

• Junjiro: Are you back for good this time, aneue (big sister)? No more danger?
• Naoe: Well every light casts a shadow. But for the moment, I'm here to stay.
• Junjiro: Yatta (Hurrah)! There's so much I can show you. I've gotten even better at painting, especially detail. I practiced a lot on Auntie Tomiko.
• Naoe: And how did that go?
• Junjiro: She asked me, "Why do you make my face look so old, Junjiro?" And I said, "Because I've gotten better at painting." And then... she hit me with a broom. But if you're home now, that means I can practice on you.
• Naoe: Mmm...Yatta (Hurrah).
• Junjiro: Hmm. What else can we do...

• Ibuki: Tell Yasuke I'm waiting here, would you? I'll stay until I have a chance to speak with him.

• Katsuhime: We've done it! After everything. I can't believe it.
• Naoe: I wonder what "timeless wisdom" Shotei would give us now.
• Katsuhime: My father? Nah, let's just do as he would. Go straight to the rice wine.

• Yaya: But still. Every choice has an echo. Whether we hear it or not.
• Naoe: Then we must choose carefully. And forgive quickly.
• Yaya: Ah. You've been listening.

• Heiji: I congratulate you, Naoe.
• Naoe: Thank you, Heiji. Whether debt you owed Tomiko, you have reaped in full.
• Heiji: I am even more in debt than before. I improved everyone's weapons, but your friendship mended more in me.
• Naoe: I noticed a glint in your eye. You're working on something, aren't you?
• Heiji: I have a new idea. Something to sustain life instead of take it.
• Naoe: That would be an impressive sword.
• Heiji: Not a sword. A cooking knife. The best Sakai has ever seen.
• Naoe: Hong! I hope it's time to eat.

• Hong: Yes. I wanted to share new food, thanks to your help.
• Naoe: Not enough natto for you?
• Hong: [grunts] New ingredients bring new ideas. Later, you will taste. I cannot stay long. Niwa's appetite makes me wealthy. Our food is still better than in Omi, or so I keep hearing. [grunts]
• Naoe: So long, Hong.

• Oni-Yuri: I have been a great help, haven't I, big sister? Are you glad to have me at your side?
• Naoe: I am. You've been a big help, little sister.
• Oni-Yuri: Mmm. (giggles) I would have been fine either way, you know. The people here are kind to me. This is my home now. But I will visit the ocean soon. I want to tell my father all the things I've done.

• Sen no Rikyu: Such celebration! I shall have to prepare some tea to properly mark the occasion. A peaceful respite from your... (clear throat) duties?
• Naoe: Master Rikyu...
• Sen no Rikyu: Oh, come now. You cannot grow as wrinkled as I without learning to read the room. I cannot condone all that you have done. But I now understand that, in your own way, you too bring balance to the world.
• Naoe: It was a dark road. But my allies lit the way.
• Sen no Rikyu: Very good.

• Yagoro: I am glad to see you have returned, teacher! I knew you would.
• Naoe: There were times I wasn't sure I would return, myself. What makes you so confident, Yagoro?
• Yagoro: We are the Kakushiba ikki! Nothing can stand in our way. But as your loyal apprentice, it would have been my duty to avenge you, should you have fallen. So I'm glad you did not fall.
• Naoe: (laughs) Thanks, Yagoro.

• Yasuke: I will go. It will be nice to see how everyone is faring.

Yasuke went to speak to each of his allies in the hideout.

• Yasuke: And how did that go?

Yasuke smiled at his words.

• Yasuke: Sure, Junjiro.
• Junjiro: Hmm. What else can we do...

Junjiro followed Yasuke afterwards and made further comments.

• Junjiro: Oh! We could paint together. There are so many animals to paint. I could teach Yasuke about shading.
  We could go fishing! I'm good at fishing. As long as the fish aren't too big and their mouths aren't too small.
  Ah! I could show Yasuke the game Auntie Tomiko taught me. Where I sit still and don't say anything for as long as I can. The "Sit Still and Be As Quiet As a Rock" game.
  We could build a fort! And only Yasuke and me are allowed inside. Well, and Naoe. And Auntie Tomiko. And probably everyone else, actually.
  Or we could do nothing. Auntie Tomiko says you need rest.
• Yasuke: Anything with you sounds nice, Junjiro.

• Heiji: I congratulate you, Yasuke.
• Yasuke: Thank you, Heiji. Whatever debt you owed Tomiko, you have repaid in full.

• Rokkaku Katsuhime: We did it! It wasn't easy, samurai, but it was worth it. Have you seen Naoe? I want to congratulate her.

• Oni-yuri: I have been a great help, haven't I, samurai? I know you had your... doubts.
• Yasuke: I did. But you have proven a valuable ally.
• Oni-yuri: Mmm. Maybe it's true that not all samurai are the same. The people here are kind to me. This is my home now. But I will visit the ocean soon. I want to tell my father all the things I've done.

• Ibuki: There's a lightness about you now, Yasuke. Like you have finally shed a heavy burden.
• Yasuke: You could say that. But it would not have been possible without you by my side, Ibuki. Both in battle and out.
• Ibuki: It suits you, this look of tranquility. I hope you will wear it for a long time. Unlike those clothes.
• Yasuke: Mm.

• Yagyū Munetoshi: You dealt with them, Yasuke? The men you were after?
• Yasuke: I did. It is a strange thing to celebrate death. But in ending these lives, thousands more will thrive. A sword that serves life through death.
• Yagyū Munetoshi: Our friends and allies learn quickly. They are the new shoots and branches of our sword school. Resplendent once more.
• Yasuke: Nobutsuna sensei would be proud of you. Your son would be proud of you.
• Yagyū Munetoshi: I have known great grief in this life. Here with your league, I have also found great purpose. Sorrow will perhaps forever shadow my heart. But I no longer beat it alone, and that itself is a kind of brightness.

• Sen no Rikyu: Congratulations are in order, samurai. I was hoping to speak with your ally. I will wait for her here.

Once Naoe and Yasuke were done talking to their allies, Tomiko called for them.

• Tomiko: Yasuke! Naoe! Come, look at this.

They returned to her at the front of the hiroma.

• Naoe: What's wrong.
• Yasuke: Did a tanuki dig up your root vegetables again?
• Tomiko: No. This.

Tomiko showed them a note fixed onto a large boulder with a kunai along with a pouch below.

• Tomiko: I didn't see anyone.

Junjiro came and join the group.

• Junjiro: Neither did I.
• Naoe: You wouldn't have.

Naoe read the scroll, written by Hattori Hanzo.

• Hanzo: Since your birth, I have watched you, Fujibayashi Naoe. You have grown and changed in ways that surprise me.
• Hanzo: But more surprising still... is the way you have changed me. I had thought hope was a useless thing. A burden to be cast aside. But in you, I finally see its strength. Hope is not a stone to weigh you down. It is a foundation on which to build. In exchange for this gift, I offer you two in return.
• Junjiro: What's this?

Junjiro opened the pouch which revealed a hood

• Hanzo: The first is a symbol. Of what we will become. And the second? Well... Suffice to say, I have a lead. Tsuyu is closer than we imagined. Hattori Hanzo.

Some time later, Naoe and Yasuke stood atop a hill and looked over the surrounding land.

• Yasuke: Will you go to him?
• Naoe: He'll find me when he's ready.
• Yasuke: And your mother?
• Naoe: I'll find her. When I'm ready.
• Yasuke: I will be here.
• Naoe: Junjiro would never let me hear the of it if you weren't.
• Yasuke: (chuckles) He is dear to me. I want to protect him. Always.
• Naoe: I know.
• Junjiro: (pants) Found you.

The two were soon joined by Junjiro.

• Naoe: You finally took off my new hood, I see.
• Junjiro: Auntie Tomiko made me. She said I'd hurt myself, running around with it falling over my eyes.
• Yasuke: It is too big for you.
• Junjiro: It is now, but... maybe I'll grow into it.
• Naoe: Are you sure you want to? It's a big job.
• Junjiro: I can do it.
• Junjiro: Anything is possible.
• Naoe: As long as this land remains divided, the Kakushiba ikki will protect its people.

Outcome

After talking with their fellow Kakushiba ikki companions, Yasuke and Naoe reminisced about their long, concluded journey while looking over Japan with Junjiro.
