A True Igan

A True Igan was a virtual representation of one of Fujibayashi Naoe's genetic memories, relived through the Animus EGO.

Description

Naoe reports to Momochi Sandayu for training as a new recruit of the Iga ikki.

Dialogue

Naoe traveled to the Shinobi Training Ground and reported to Sandayu.

• Naoe: Sir Sandayu.
• Momochi Sandayu: Your face has changed. You are no longer a girl, but an Igan shinobi.
• Naoe: I look different already?
• Momochi Sandayu: It is the way of war. Even at my age, I leave each battle a changed man. You did your part well against Nobukatsu. I have other need of you.
• Naoe: Anything. I am ready.

Sandayu tasks Naoe to check on the Igan watchtower

• Momochi Sandayu: We lost contact with one of our watchtowers. I want you to check on the Igans posted there.
• Naoe: Are they in trouble?
• Momochi Sandayu: I do not know. But since Oda clan has breached our borders, caution is prudent.
  Go south of the village. Use this to get inside the tower.

Sandayu handed Naoe a grappling hook.

• Momochi Sandayu: It is a useful tool to get you to places only shinobi can go. In between shadows. Be brave, young Fujibayashi.

Naoe headed up the hills and used the grappling hook to get from one tree branch to another.

• Naoe: All right. Up and over!

After jumping into a haystack, Naoe got out and make her way to Kunimiyama Fort on foot. As she approached, she noticed something was wrong, as Oda soldiers were present instead of the Igans.

• Naoe: (gasps) Oda ashigaru. They've taken over the tower.

Naoe freeran up a fallen tree log near a broken fence and used the grappling hook to navigate to the tower. Avoiding the soldiers at the fence, Naoe used the tall grass to approach and found more soldiers.

• Naoe: More of them. I can use my hook to take them down.

After taking down the soldiers, Naoe got behind the door and found more ashigaru.

• Naoe: Definitely not Igans. All Oda clan ashigaru. I should avoid them.

Naoe eavesdropping on two Oda guards

She crouched behind a stack of bamboo to eavesdrop on the soldiers nearby.

• Ashigaru Spearman: It's been weeks. How long do we have to stay here?
• Ashigaru Archer: Why leave? We took care of the Igans.
• Ashigaru Spearman: Others will be suspicious soon enough.

Naoe whispered to herself on the findings.

• Naoe: Weeks? They've been here since Nobukatsu's attack.

Naoe decided to head deeper into the fort. Atop a building, she eavesdropped on the nearby soldiers in the tall grass.

• Ashigaru Swordsman: We've used up all our reserves. I'm starving!
• Ashigaru Spearman: Then sneak into town and get us something to eat.
• Ashigaru Swordsman: They know our colors.
• Ashigaru Spearman: Take the armor off the Igan in the tower. There's your disguise.

Naoe whispered to herself on the findings.

• Naoe: That Igan must be the fort leader. At the the top of the tower. Maybe he's still alive.

Naoe finds the body of the Igan leader

Naoe used the grappling hook to get to a platform outside the tower. She then climbed up and found a dead shinobi, much to her dismay.

• Naoe: They killed him. They took our tower and killed every Igan here. I need to tell Momochi Sandayu what happened.

Naoe got up to the platform and jumped into the haystack outside the fort. She then returned to the Shinobi Grounds to report her findings to Sandayu.

• Momochi Sandayu: Well?

Naoe reports her findings to Sandayu

• Naoe: Stranded Oda clan ashigaru. They killed the Igans stationed in the tower.
• Momochi Sandayu: The rats. I will send men there immediately. Do not worry. You have learned a valuable shinobi lesson today. Subterfuge. Gathering information.
• Naoe: "Observation is the key to victory."
• Momochi Sandayu: Matsu's specialty in her younger years. A great warrior, but an even better spy. You will do well to follow in her footsteps. Thank you for your work, shinobi.

Naoe besting her father during a sparring session

Naoe went to continue her training, improving her aim with the kunai, traversing on trees while enduring the cold winds to hunt animals, and blowing the tsuchibue like her father Nagato. In addition, Naoe also focused on training her mind by practicing kuji-kiri on high locations, and sparred with her father using bokken. Two years later, she was able to defeat her father during a sparring session, traverse the trees without startling an animal, and aim accurately with the kunai. One day, Naoe met with her father.

• Naoe: When will you get back from the ikki (league) ceremony?
• Nagato: I do not know, but we will find out together. You will be there too.
• Naoe: Me? I'm going to the assembly?

Nagato invites Naoe to the Iga ikki assembly

• Nagato: You have been working hard, and you are more than ready. I want you to be there. So, you won't have to eavesdrop like you did when you were a young girl.
• Naoe: I always knew you saw me spying.
• Nagato: Well, now you are formally invited. I will meet you there. Take our horse, hm?

Outcome

Naoe helped Sandayu investigate their base at the Kunimiyama Fort, which was overtaken by ashigaru from Oda Nobunaga's army. After two years training, Nagato invited Naoe to attend their league's assembly.
