Svartálfaheimr

Svartalfheim (Runic: ᛋᚢᛅᚱᛏᛅᛚᚠᚼᛅᛁᛘ; Old Norse: Svartálfaheimr) was one of the Nine Realms in Norse mythology, and was home to the dwarven race.

History[edit | edit source]

The blacksmith Ivaldi came from the mountains of Svartalfheim and intended to return to the mines there once released from his imposed service under the Asgardian Odin.[1]

Geography[edit | edit source]

Svartalfheim was divided into the regions of Gullnámar, Svaladal, and Vangrinn. Landlocked between the regions of Vangrinn and Svaladal, lay the city of Eitri. Svartalfheim was coastally bordered by the Hafinn to the south-west and the Dverga Sea to the north-west.[2]

Gullnámar[edit | edit source]

Main article: Gullnámar

Gullnámar was an extraordinarily mountainous region. Each mountain was rich with gold and silica deposits.[2] The late-king Hreiðmarr had a palace that was placed atop one of the highest peaks in the region.[3] By the time of the Muspels' invasion, lava and magma flowed through portions of the region, empowering the invaders. Two rivers flowed through the region, the Vindkleif River ran through the area, sectioning it in half leading into Svaladal, and another the other, Nedar-skapt, led into half of Vangrinn. The region housed at least two Dwarven shelters and three raidable Mylna.[2]

Vangrinn[edit | edit source]

Main article: Vangrinn

Vangrinn was a sparsely populated region of a mostly low-lying lacustrine ecosystem with some tall outcroppings of Silica. Visibility in the area was low as a fog permeated the air above the wetlands. Portions of the region were covered in snow and ice due to the interference of Jötnar. The Fornvatn River split the region in two.[2]

Economy[edit | edit source]

Svartalfheim was known to not partake in the practice of slavery.[1] Instead, it had a rich trade revolving around the precious silica gemstones that they refined and used to power Isu technology.[2]
