Nikolai Orelov aiming his rifle

A rifle is a long-barreled firearm that was developed in the 19th century, a successor to the musket.[1] The difference between a rifle and a musket is the rifling within its gun barrel, which not only gives the name to the weapon, but also provides the spin to the bullet, making it an amazingly accurate weapon compared to its predecessors.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

Rifles were sold in Parisian markets during the French Revolution, where the French Assassin Arno Dorian acquired both the Sharpshooter Flintlock and the Long Rifle.[3]

The East India Company,[4] Sikh Empire,[5] Red Army[6] and NKVD[7] all employed soldiers that specialized in using rifles, the so-called "riflemen" or "rifle guards". In the early 20th century, the Russian Assassin Nikolai Orelov used a Berdan rifle modified by his friend Fedor Tokarev, who added an unique suppressor for Orelov, making it almost silent though with some loss to power, and modified the gun to use 7.62mm cartridges which were in use by the Red Army at the time.[8]

In 2016, the Assassin Galina Voronina used a sniper rifle to provide cover fire to Charlotte de la Cruz while they attempted to rescue their friend Kody Adams, who had been captured by the Mexican cartel and was being held hostage at Estadio Azteca.[9]

In the 21st century, assault rifles have become commonplace among most world militaries, police forces, and criminal organizations thanks to their high rate of fire and simple reload mechanism. In 2023, members of both Abstergo Industries' task force Sigma Team and the Assassin-affiliated crime syndicate Doom Eagle carried assault rifles, which they used during their various altercations throughout Southeast Asia.[10]
