Workers' and Peasants' Militia

The Workers' and Peasants' Militsiya was a force of volunteer civilian fighters created by the Bolsheviks which comprised part of the Red Army.^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4] These men had little to no professional training or combat experience, and the militia was chiefly counted on to provide an ample supply of cheap manpower. They acted to enforce the Bolsheviks' security measures in the cities they controlled during the Russian Revolution and the early days of the Soviet Union. The Bolsheviks also intended them to be a symbolic contrast with the previous state police, which they touted as "protection for the rich".^[1]
