Double-Crossed was a virtual representation of one of Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke's genetic memories, relived through the Animus EGO.[1]

Description[edit | edit source]

Naoe and Yasuke travel to the Iseji Trails in search of Captain Yang's shipwreck. -

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Naoe and Yasuke explored the eastern coast of Kii and found the shipwreck by the beach.

  • Yasuke: There it is. The Black Cross shipwreck.
As he approached for a closer look, he found bandits in the area.
  • Yasuke: Scavengers on the beach.

  • Scavenger: Anything you find, you take!

Naoe and Yasuke approached the site, prompting the looters to attack him.

  • Scavenger: Hey! We got here first! This stuff's ours!

After eliminating the scavengers, Naoe and Yasuke opened a big chest and recovered a note from the Templars.

Your New Mission

I remain grateful for your dedication and enthusiasm in your search for the Observatory and I regret that I must redirect your efforts towards a matter of some urgency.

Our operations in the Japans continue to suffer at the hands of an individual known as "Diogo." He, and all who aid him, must be eliminated so that we may continue to protect humanity from itself.

May the Father of Understanding guide you.

– M.

  • Yasuke: They are here because of me... I cannot let anyone suffer the consequences of my actions.

The two opened another chest by the rock and recovered a log belonging to the ship captain.

Captain Yang's Log

Day 3 at Sea
Took two passengers in Macau headed for the Japans. Fancy. Rich. They provided maps. European-made. They also have brandy. Might confiscate it.

Day 27 at Sea
China coast still on port side. European maps unreliable in these waters. Brandy is great stuff though.

Day 43 at Sea
Boarded by pirates. Passengers killed them all! Old man is fearsome but the woman is scarier, laughing as she bled them dry.

Day 57 at Sea
I hear them whispering at night. They speak of impossible things. Out of grog. Out of Brandy. All I have are nightmares of that woman killing pirates.

Day 62 at Sea
The Japans finally in sight. Passengers eager to disembark. I'm eager to get rid of them. Approaching at high tide tomorrow.

Day 63 at Sea
Terrible maps! Hit an unmarked reef. Taking on water. Abandoning ship. I'm going to go get drunk now.

  • Yasuke: They fended off pirates... Those Black Cross seem to know how to fight.

Naoe and Yasuke continued looking around and saw a key on top of an opened chest.

  • Naoe: Captain Yang said the Black Cross kept their documents in a chest. This might lock it.
  • Yasuke: The chest must have gone down into the water.
  • Naoe: I'll go look for it?
  • Yasuke: Good. There may be more for me to find here.

Yasuke looked around while Naoe swam out to the shipwreck. She first looted the chest on the surface but found resources instead of valuables. She dived underwater and looted more chests, finding only more resources.

  • Naoe: Got to keep searching. It must be around here.

She returned to the surface multiple times to get air.

  • Naoe: Focus Naoe. Deep breaths!

Naoe headed to deeper waters to the underwater rock formations and found a chest. Inside, she looted journals written by the Black Cross Eamon Hathaway.

Eamon's Journal: My Mission

March 4th, 1552

The Inner Sanctum has bestowed upon me a great honour, the exalted rank of Templar Black Cross.

My father remained as stoic as ever when he presented me with the Hathaway family sword. When he put it into my hands, he made me promise to fulfill a mission he could not: to find a mysterious precursor site known as The Observatory.

I will not fail him. I shall embody the Order's ideals in words and deeds. I shall uncover the secrets of Those Who Came Before for the sake of all our peaceful tomorrows.

May the Father of Understanding guide me.

Eamon's Journal: Marrakech

June 8th, 1555

Every attempt to locate the Observatory or a Piece of Eden, ends with me standing empty-handed, surrounded by evidence of Kassandra's presence. It happened on the Isle of Skye and the Ionian Isles. Now in Marrakech.

Yet something is different. The Scottish cave contained a pedestal, where a Piece of Eden once rested, long since removed. The vault in Marrakesh contained an Isu axe, devoid of power. I cannot shake the feeling that the axe was placed here recently, perhaps to placate the avarice of lesser men.

Could Kassandra still be alive? The idea seems to be laughable. And yet...

Eamon's Journal: Beijing

November 13, 1578

Infiltrated the Beijing Synod called by Shao Jun. The Chinese Mentor is a frail old thing, yet her mind remains as sharp as ever. Alas, we could not get close enough to kill her. In attendance was a scholar who believed a precursor temple exists on Japan's main island. He offered as proof his hand-drawn reproductions of mysterious symbols and glyphs.

I acquired the illustrations while Nirmala disposed of the scholar with great enthusiasm. Could this be the Observatory? I will make my way there in due course. Perhaps I can finally put Kassandra's nonsense behind me.

While Naoe was exploring the shipwreck, Yasuke looked around and saw a note and drawing containing symbols that he and Naoe had seen in Wakasa, prompting him to take out the object he obtained from Kinu and Kane. At the moment, Yasuke sensed an arrow being shot at him from afar and promptly dodged it by rolling away. The masked killer from before came and attacked Yasuke, who dodged her attacks with his blade.

  • Masked killer: You move well for someone your size.
  • Yasuke: You cut down an innocent man back there...
  • Masked killer: People can be many things – but innocent is rarely one of them.
  • Yasuke: So you are a Black Cross, like the old man...
  • Masked killer: I am Nirmala, from the island of Java. And you...
  • Yasuke: I am Yasuk—
  • Nirmala: —are a dead man!

Nirmala charged Yasuke with a kama-yari but he dodged the attack.

  • Yasuke: Tsk. Templar scum.

Nirmala's Promotion

Sir Hathaway,

I confess to being skeptical when you took that young orphan under your wing. How delightful it is to be proven wrong. The Inner Sanctum hereby grants Nirmala the rank of Black Cross.

Please continue to train her as you see fit so that she may bring Order and Understanding to an increasingly chaotic world. I look forward to watching Nirmala's progress in the future. I hope you are as proud of your acolyte as I am of you.

May the Father of Understanding guide you both.
– M.

Sketched Glyphs

This paper showcases a number of sketched glyphs—likely drawn by the Black Cross themselves. Clearly they are being studied and sought out.

A duel began between Yasuke and Nirmala.

  • Nirmala: I will bleed you dry!
  • Yasuke: Shut your mouth!

The masked woman taunted Yasuke in between.

  • Nirmala: You are slowing down, big man.
  • Yasuke: Do you ever shut up?
  • Nirmala: You move well—but I move better!
  • Yasuke: [growls]

Yasuke landed blows on her.

  • Yasuke: Not so glib now...

As the fight came to a stalemate, Nirmala charged numerous times at Yasuke, who easily dodged it. Still patient, Yasuke slowly withdrew his sword, causing Nirmala to believe he dropped his guard and charged once again.

  • Nirmala: Now you di—[chokes]

This time, she was not so lucky and was grabbed in her neck with her sword thrown away.

  • Yasuke: Overconfident. Like all Templars I have defeated...

Nirmala's partner Eamon arrived at that moment.

  • Eamon: Ah. Nirmala. How many times must I warn you against being so impulsive?
  • Nirmala: I have everything under control!

Nirmala managed to kick Yasuke away and escape his hold.

  • Eamon: He has you figured out and so you've lost the advantage.
  • Nirmala: I can handle him, Eamon.
  • Eamon: Be that as it may...

Eamon drew his sword as well.

  • Eamon: ...we have more important business to attend to.

Having the numbers advantage, Nirmala attacked Yasuke once again, this time with Eamon.

  • Eamon: Where is the Assassin?
  • Nirmala: She dove into the wreck.
  • Eamon: Does he have the keystone?
  • Nirmala: It's on his belt!
  • Yasuke: You've changed your mind about killing us, then?
  • Eamon: You have something we need.

Despite being outmaneuvered numerous times, Yasuke stood his ground.

  • Nirmala: How is he still standing?!

Eventually, Yasuke was overwhelmed enough that his guard dropped, allowing Nirmala to wound his knee. While Eamon parries Yasuke's attacks, Nirmala uses the opening to land slashes on Yasuke. Eamon pushes his sword against Yasuke, forcing him to his knees.

  • Eamon: Now!

This allowed Nirmala to stab him in the abdomen.

  • Yasuke: No...
  • Eamon: I see now why they sent for us.

Eamon tried to land the final blow, but Yasuke still retained enough strength to stop his attacks.

  • Eamon: Have it your way, then.

The Templar disarmed Yasuke, causing him to fall the ground.

  • Eamon: The keystone?

Nirmala picked up the keystone and handed it over to Eamon.

  • Eamon: Yes—Yes! This is it!

As Eamon prepared to execute Yasuke, he was stopped by Nirmala.

  • Nirmala: Leave him. He'll be dead in moments and the girl won't pursue us if she's trying to save his life.
  • Eamon: Cruel... But efficient. Well played.
  • Nirmala: I like keeping you on your toes, old man.

The two Templars took their leave, leaving the samurai to die. Naoe, who resurfaced, saw the wounded Yasuke.

  • Naoe: Yasuke... Yasuke!

She ran quickly to check on him.

  • Naoe: Hey, hey—it's okay, I'm here.
  • Yasuke: The ornament... I could... not find... an opening...
  • Naoe: No... No no no no no—stay with me, come on, stay with me... Come on Yasuke, stay with me.... Don't do this—you have to stay with me, please... Somebody help! Come on big man, stay with me... We'll fix you up in no time... No, no no no—Yasuke! Yasuke!

A still barely conscious Yasuke thought to himself.

  • Yasuke: Where am I? What is this? I am... defeated. But am I dead? No. Not dead. But I am dying.

He seemingly found himself in a space with nothing by darkness. He approached what seemed to be a memory of his mother's execution by Nuno Caro.

  • Yasuke: Someone over there... Is that... Is that my mother? This path began with my mother's murder...

He remembered the sounds of the incident.

  • Diogo: Mother! [cries] Mama. Mama...
  • Yasuke: You have been avenged, Mama. There is so much to tell you about. I wonder what you will say to me, Mama. If you are proud of the man I became.

He then approached another memory in which he became a retainer under Oda Nobunaga.

  • Yasuke: There, in the distance... Lord Nobunaga! Lord Nobunaga forged me into the warrior I became.
  • Oda Nobunaga: What's more, you have earned your place next to me. As a samurai.
  • Yasuke: Your betrayer also lies dead, my friend. Perhaps we will soon share tea together.

Yasuke turned around and saw another memory, this time of the night when he, Naoe and Junjiro had a moment at Katano Castle.

  • Yasuke: There must be more for me to see here. Over there. It looks like... Yes, I remember this moment very well.
  • Yasuke: Naoe, Junjiro, you have showed me forgiveness and compassion. You have made me a better man.
  • Naoe: You still want to walk beside me? Follow this wind wherever it takes us?
  • Yasuke: I will miss you both. Thank you, my friends... Not my friends: my family. I cannot leave you behind. Not yet!
  • Shadow Yasuke: Death has already won.
  • Yasuke: Then I will defeat it too, if I must.

In the void, Yasuke fought against his counterpart.

  • Shadow Yasuke: It is time for us to rest. Our fight is over.

Yasuke defeated his shadow counterpart.

  • Yasuke: No doubt I will die in combat one day. But it will not be today.
  • Shadow Yasuke: Not today.

At a long time, Yasuke regained conscious and found himself back at the hideout patched up, with Kinu beside him. He slowly got up and was soon noticed by Kinu and Yasukane.

  • Yasukane: It's good to have you back, sir!
  • Kinu: He's alive? He's alive!
  • Yasukane: Of course he's alive, you idiot! Nothing can kill a legend!

Hearing the commotion, Rufino came checking in.

  • Rufino: Get out, both of you. Give the man some space.
  • Yasukane: I watched you sleep, oh great samurai, sir. To make sure you were okay.

Kinu and Kane left the room.

  • Rufino: So, how are you feeling, my friend?
  • Yasuke: Like I have been... trampled by a pack of wild horses... Help me up!

Rufino helped Yasuke get up and slowly took Yasuke out of the room.

  • Rufino: Easy now - I don't want Tomiko to scream at me if your bandages come undone...

The two slowly walked out of the hiroma and found Naoe scolding both Kinu and Yasukane outside.

  • Naoe: Let me get this straight, you just told them exactly what they wanted to know? Had I know you two morons would turn on your allies that easily, you would still be living with the macaques of Wakasa!

Naoe noticed that Yasuke regained conscious.

  • Naoe: You're awake!

She immediately ran to his side.

  • Naoe: How are you standing? I was certain you were done for...
  • Yasuke: You should know by now - I am very hard to kill.
  • Rufino: What did our stall shovelers do this time?
  • Naoe: They nearly got Yasuke killed - that's what.
  • Yasuke: Me? How?
  • Naoe: They told those Black Cross about the ornament of the glyphs - and who they gave it to.
  • Yasukane: It was Kinu's fault!
  • Kinu: What!?
  • Yasukane: He liked those carvings so much, he offered them some riddle scrolls!

Naoe rolled her eyes and shook her head in disappointment. Kinu took out the figurine he had obtained from the Templars.

  • Kinu: I... I had never seen an elephant before...
  • Yasuke: The ornament of the gylphs - they took it from me. Perhaps the mysterious door is what they were after all along.
  • Rufino: That would make sense...

Rufino let out a sigh and sat down on the stairs.

  • Rufino: The people I used to work for.
  • Naoe: The Templars.
  • Rufino: Yes, the Templars. They are always searching for lost places, temples and the like. They believe such places hold powerful, almost magical, relics.

Rufino helped Yasuke to sit down.

  • Yasuke: Like the story of the Holy Grail.
  • Rufino: Yes. Yes! Exactly like the Holy Grail.
  • Kinu: What's a grail?
  • Yasukane: It's a kind of bird. Shut up.
  • Naoe: We did find some strange objects behind that door... Could it be what they want?
  • Yasuke: Maybe... Or maybe we missed something?
  • Naoe: Worth having another look.
  • Yasuke: Hm. Not without the ornament.
  • Rufino: Whatever they're after, it's behind that door.
  • Naoe: Then I'll head there to investigate.

Yasuke stopped her from leaving.

  • Yasuke: Naoe, wait. Defeating just one of them was nearly too much for me... The two of them together...
  • Naoe: We can't allow them to get to get what they're after.

Yasuke turned to Rufino and spoke to him in Portuguese.

  • Yasuke: (Portuguese) Brother, can I trust you to protect her with your life?

Rufino got up and nodded in agreement.

  • Naoe: Did you ask him to babysit me?
  • Rufino: What? No. No! Yasuke promised he would stay here and recovered.
  • Naoe: You did ask him to babysit me!
  • Rufino: I'm not doing it for you. I swore to strike back at the Templars for what they did to Ermigo.
  • Naoe: Let's send these Templars back to the ocean that spawned them.
  • Rufino: Yasuke, rest well. I will scout ahead. Join me in Wakasa, Naoe.

Rufino took his leave.

  • Yasukane: Master Rufino, sir -should we not come and help you?
  • Rufino: That won't be necessary, gentlemen.
  • Kinu: Why not? We know how to kick and how to choke - we can help!
  • Rufino: You can help by keeping Yasuke in bed.

Naoe saw that Yasuke still have unfinished words.

  • Naoe: Come on, say it.
  • Yasuke: Promise me you will not face them alone.
  • Naoe: If I see an opening, I'm taking their lives... But I promise to be careful. Is that good enough?

The two exchanged a slight nod, and Naoe soon got on her way. She noticed Yasuke still watching her.

  • Naoe: Stop looking at me like it's the last time - it's annoying!

Outcome[edit | edit source]

Following a confrontation against the two Black Crosses, Yasuke is left for dead, his Isu beacon taken by the two Templars seeking the Observatory. Yasuke survived the injuries, but was forced to step back, causing Naoe and Rufino to investigate the Wakasa cave in his stead.
