João Machado (died 1558) was a priest and Portuguese Templar who served as the right hand to his fellow Templar and missionary Gaspar Vilela during his mission in Japan. In 1558, João was on a Portuguese ship leaving off the coast of Owari Province when the kunoichi Mochizuki Chiyome and the rōnin Akira boarded it. Both were Japanese Assassins on different missions for the Brotherhood's ally Oda Nobunaga, with Chiyome sent to obtain some arquebuses from storage for Nobunaga's army while Akira sought a wooden box that João held which contained a Piece of Eden. Akira dispatched João's men and assassinated him with his Hidden Blade, and during the confusion, Chiyome took the box. With João dead, the rest of his men perished when a dying guard threw a lit match into a gunpowder case, exploding the ship.[1]
