The Hunt for the Snake was a years-long personal vendetta carried out by the Medjay Bayek and his wife Aya to avenge the murder of their son Khemu at the hands of the Order of the Ancients, known collectively as "the Snake".
Prelude
In 49 BCE, the Order of the Ancients discovered a vault located beneath the Temple of Amun in Siwa. Believing that the vault was connected to an orb-shaped relic in their possession and hoping to learn secrets the Isu had locked away, several members of the Order travelled to Siwa in attempt to access the temple's power.[1] Through contact with their agent Bion, the Order learned [citation needed] that the bloodline of Siwa's current Medjay Bayek was special.[2] With this knowledge, the Order arranged to capture Bayek and force him to reveal the way to open the vault, though they also kidnapped his son Khemu during the Medjay's abduction.[1]
As they forcefully interrogated a restrained Bayek for information he did not know about a place that he was unaware had existed, the ensemble were interrupted by news of Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII's sudden arrival. In their panic, they scattered throughout the vault, giving Khemu the opportunity to quietly steal a knife from an Order member and give it to his father to free himself. When the Order returned, they threatened to murder Khemu if Bayek did not answer to their liking before Ptolemy entered. Bayek, enraged, broke free of his bonds and attempted to kill one of the members with the knife, only for them to catch his blow before it landed and redirect his attack into Khemu, killing him. Horrified at having inadvertently slain his son, Bayek could only mourn for a moment before he was knocked unconscious and abandoned.[1]
The Hunt
The Heron

After a year of searching, Bayek learned that Saqqara Nome's nomarch Rudjek was one of the masked man known as "the Heron". Bayek tracked him down to Sneferu's Bent Pyramid,[1] where he fought and defeated Rudjek's bodyguard Hypatos[3] before continuing on to corner his target. When Rudjek asked why a Medjay hunted him when they were supposed to protect the pharaohs, Bayek denied serving the Ptolemaic dynasty and instead showed his arm covered in tattooed cryptonyms.[1]
The nomarch panicked at seeing his name crossed off, swearing that his brethren would find and stop Bayek, and attempted to avert his fate by throwing to the Medjay the same knife that killed Khemu. However, Bayek blocked it with Rudjek's mask he had recovered earlier and vowed in turn that he would wait in the shadows to eliminate everyone in the Order who was at Siwa. He then thrust the knife and mask into Rudjek's face, killing him.[1]
The Ibis

A few months later, Hypatos confronted Bayek at some ruins on the outskirts of Siwa, determined to avenge his master's death and his wounded pride at being defeated but left alive. In the midst of the fight, he slammed his mace into the ground and broke it, sending both into a lower chamber, where they continued their duel. Although Bayek offered a truce, Hypatos stubbornly refused in the name of honor. Eventually, Bayek proved the better warrior and killed Hypatos.[3]
Bayek navigated his way out of the ruins and saw his friend Hepzefa fighting a group of soldiers from the Ptolemaic army. He immediately rushed to protect his friend and killed the attackers.[3] Hepzefa, surprised to see Bayek after a year of absence, welcomed him warmly and the two men rode back to Siwa. Along the way, Hepzefa told Bayek of the brutality and unfair treatment the villagers suffered at the hands of the Oracle of Amun Medunamun, otherwise known as "The Ibis", thus giving Bayek his next target.[4]

Arriving at Hepzefa's house, Hepzefa told Bayek to rest after his long journey, but Bayek declined, saying he needed to prepare and kill Medunamun. At that moment, the village's healer Rabiah interrupted the two and requested Hepzefa's aid to deal with disruptive soldiers, only to immediately notice Bayek and tend to his wounds after persuading him to take a rest. His respite was cut short, however, when a villager warned everyone of incoming soldiers sent by Medunamun. Bayek and Hepzefa hid in the yard and learned through eavesdropping that the soldiers were ordered to kill them both in retaliation for Rudjek's murder. Nevertheless, the soldiers were no match for the two Medjays and were quickly dispatched.[4]

After the soldiers were killed, Hepzefa took Bayek to reunite with Senu, his female Bonelli's eagle whom Rabiah had nursed back to health in Bayek's absence. Before Bayek set off to kill Medunamun, Hepzefa urged him to improve his equipment and to help solve various problems caused by Medunamun's soldiers. To that end, he suggested Bayek do both by aiding the blacksmith Benipe, whose tools were confiscated after he was accused of being a member of the local rebels. Having heard of this, Bayek recovered the tools from Camp Shetjeh and returned them to Benipe. Now able to open his shop again, Benipe rewarded Bayek with weapons he had hidden from the soldiers during the confiscation.[5]

Once he armed himself with a new weapon, Bayek infiltrated the Temple of Amun and freed several priests from Medunamun's abusive treatment. Bayek soon found and assassinated Medunamun, but even in the Oracle's last moments, he showed no remorse for his murders and sneeringly taunted Bayek for being unable to save his son. This comment infuriated Bayek, who promptly bludgeoned the unrepentant oracle to death in a frenzy.[6] With Medunamun's demise, Siwa was liberated and Bayek returned to Hepfeza to drink in celebration, but his vengeance was still far from over, as his friend told him that Aya was tracking more masked members in Alexandria. After bidding Hepzefa farewell and entrusting him to take his place as Medjay of Siwa, Bayek left for the great city.[7]
The Vulture and The Ram

During Bayek's hunt, Aya was also pursuing her own targets in Alexandria, where she suspected Actaeon was part of the Order. Her suspicions were proven when she found an Order mask in Actaeon's room, after which, she forced him to don it before thrusting a knife through the eye slits, killing him. When Aya returned to her house, the Order member Ktesos attacked her in an attempt to avenge Actaeon, though his efforts failed and she also killed him. Both Actaeon and Ktesos' deaths in such quick succession caught the attention of Alexandria's Phylakitai Gennadios, forcing Aya into hiding upon being declared a wanted criminal.[8]
The Hippo
Bayek arrived at Alexandria, where he was supposed to find Aya at the city's famed library. There, he met Aya's cousin Phanos, who explained to Bayek that Aya was currently in hiding due to her being wanted, before taking the man to the hideout in question. After a year of separation, Bayek was finally reunited with his wife. Aya showed Bayek a royal papyrus she took from Actaeon, proof that the Order had strong ties to the royal Ptolemy family, then gave Bayek a Hidden Blade she recovered[8] that was once owned and used by the ancient freedom fighter Darius to kill the Persian King Xerxes I in 465 BCE.[9] After testing the Blade, Bayek strapped it to his posterior forearm, unaware that Darius had actually used it on the anterior side, and set off to reveal the identity of "the Snake" and eliminate Gennadios.[8]
Bayek soon found and assassinated Gennadios inside Akra Garrison. In his last moments, Gennadios told Bayek that he was only doing his duty as a phylakitai and questioned whether Bayek's vengeance was above all laws.[10] With Gennadios dead, Bayek infiltrated the city's Royal Palace and entered the Royal Scribe's office, where he found a letter that revealed the royal scribe Eudoros himself as "Snake". Bayek then headed to a bathhouse to exact his revenge.[11]
Upon entering the bathhouse, Bayek climbed into the ceiling rafters and attacked Eudoros from above by attempting to drown him. However, Eudoros overpowered Bayek and in the resulting scuffle for control, Bayek activated his Hidden Blade and killed Eudoros, though he lost his left ring finger when the blade severed it while he had a clenched fist. As he died, Eudoros cryptically stated he had nothing to do with the incident in Siwa before declaring "the Snake" immortal, affirming it was not his cryptonym. Bayek esacped the bathhouse and returned to Aya on top of the tower, believing that their hunt was finally over, The two embraces each other.[8]

The next day, Bayek was uncertain about Eudoros and doubted that he was the last target in his hunt. On hearing this, Aya suggested that they ask her informant Apollodorus and told her husband to find Apollodorus' contact at the Hippodrome. Bayek found the contact Machus and was guided to meet with Apollodorus at the lighthouse in Kanapos after dusk. Later that night, Bayek arrived at the rendezvous and found Apollodorus on a boat with a wounded man. Apollodorus explained that his other informant Damastes and the important scroll he carried had been captured, then promptly struck a deal with the Medjay to rescue his informant, much to his annoyance. Once Bayek rescued Damestes and retrieved the scroll from the sunken ship, he returned both information sources to Apollodorus and was rewarded by being taken to meet Cleopatra at Apollodorus' estate.[12]

There, Apollodorus introduced Bayek to Cleopatra along with her subordinate, Pasherenptah the high priest of Memphis. Cleopatra explained that Eudoros was a member of the Order of the Ancients, a secretive cabal responsible for her exile. Apollodorus then revealed that his intelligence network had learned the cryptonyms of four Order members, namely, "The Scarab", "The Hyena", "The Lizard", and "The Crocodile". Cleopatra then offered a golden Medjay badge to Bayek, which the latter accepted, signifying his allegiance to the new pharaoh.[12]
The Scarab

Having gained the names of more targets, Bayek traveled to Sais village in Sapi-Res Nome in search of The Scarab. At the village, he met Apollodorus' informant Harkhuf and learned the village was under the unjust rule of The Scarab's subordinate Sefetu, and that the latest victim was the old man Ghupa, who was brutally beaten and had his tongue cut out after his failed attempt to reveal The Scarab's identity. Harkhuf took Bayek to meet Ghupa's grandson Kawab, who directed the Medjay to where Ghupa was imprisoned in Camp Pyrrhos. Bayek rescued Ghupa and returned him to his family, and in gratitude, Ghupa gave Bayek a letter containing information about The Scarab rallying troops in Letopolis. Before he left for the city, Bayek promised Kawab he would give his toy horse to his father Taharqa, Letopolis' city planner.[13]

Bayek arrived at Letopolis and met Taharqa. After handing over Kawab's toy, Bayek began asking him for information on the Scarab, only to be interrupted by news of bandits attacking the city. The two men immediately rushed to fend off the attackers. Once the bandits were slain, Taharqa rallied his warriors and requested Bayek's aid in assaulting the bandit camp. Bayek agreed and together they successfully destroyed the base. Taharqa invited Bayek to his house for a celebratory meal, promising to tell him everything about the Scarab. However, during dinner, Bayek began suffering from the effects of a sedative and began to lose consciousness. When Taharqa came to his side on the pretense of helping him, Bayek noticed Taharqa's ring engraved with the Order's insignia and belatedly realized that he was "The Scarab" all along.[14]
Bayek awoke to find himself buried up to his neck in the middle of the desert and rid of all of his equipment, though he managed to escape with the help of his mount and Senu. Bayek recovered his equipment from Camp Achlys before heading back to Letopolis to eliminate Taharqa, whom he assassinated while the man prayed in the Temple of Horus. In his final moments, Taharqa regretted how he was unable to fulfill his dream of rebuilding Letopolis before proudly declaring that his name and achievements would be remembered for ages, though Bayek countered this by insisting that Taharqa's name and achievements would instead eventually be forgotten. Kawab, having witnessed his father's death, rushed at Bayek and attempted to attack him until he was restrained by his grandfather, but even still swore to kill Bayek and avenge his father.[14]
The Hyena
Bayek continued his hunt in the region of Giza, and met another Apollodorus's informants, Mered. The informant reveals that the "Hyena" real name was Khaliset, Before tasking Bayek to recover his stolen horse from a bandits in exchange for more informations. Bayek later returned the stolen horse to Mered and gained the location of Khaliset's hideout, Bayek traveled to the hideout and was attacked by a packs of Hyenas that was protecting the place. After the Hyenas were killed, Bayek found a parchment with a drawing of the Great Pyramid of Giza, and tracked Khaliset down to the Pyramid.[15]

There he navigated his way down to beneath of the Pyramid and enters an Isu Vault, Where he discovered that Khaliset was performing a ritual in an attempt to revive her deceased daughter, Before he was confronted by Khaliset herself, Bayek chased her down to the outside of the Pyramid, where they dueled in midst of a desert storm. Eventually, Khaliset was slain by Bayek. In her last moments, Khaliset regretted that she failed to bring her daughter back to life. Bayek sympathized with Khaliset's loss, wished that she will find her daughter in the afterlife.[15]
The Lizard
Having eliminated two of his targets, Bayek arrived at the plague-ridden city of Memphis, Before making his way to the Temple of Ptah and met the city's High Priest, Pasherenptah who was observing the afflicted Apis bull, as the High Priest was grieved by the condition of the bull. Bayek comforts the man by promising him that he will lift the "curse" from the city, and eliminate the "Lizard", As Bayek leaves, Pasherenptah told that his wife's Seer provide assistance in Bayek's hunt.[16]
When Bayek arrived at the Pasherenptah's house, He observed the Seer performing a ritual in an attempt to lift the "curse" from Pasherenptah's wife, Taimhotep, During the ritual, the Seer gave a hallucinogenic brewage to Bayek and Taimhotep, Which causes both of them to promptly passed out from the effects of the brewage. Bayek later wakes up as the Seer declared that someone at the city's temple has poisoned the food Taimhotep has been eating, which is the true cause of her miscarriage. Having gained a new lead in his hunt, Bayek leaves the house.[16]
As Bayek leaves the house, he was warmly greeted by Aya who were also pursuing The Lizard. As the two travel to the temple, Bayek asked Aya to stay with him once their hunt is over, though Aya states that she is bound to Cleopatra's service. This causes Bayek to start questioning his wife's allegiance to Cleopatra. The two begin the investigation at the temple and discovered that the culprits behind the illness of the bull were the twin priestesses of the temple all along. The twin confesses that their brother, Panchrates, has been kidnapped and they were forced to poison the bull in exchange for their brother's safety, Bayek rescued the brother and returned the man safely to the twins, and in gratitude, Panchrates revealed that the conspirator behind the poisoning was one of the city's priest of Anubis, with a blue scarf and a persistent cough.[16]

Upon gaining information on the Lizard, Bayek and Aya return to Cleopatra to report their founding. As Bayek describes a description of the Lizard, Pasherenptah realized that description matched one of his trusted advisors Hetepi, before telling Bayek that the Anubis Priests will be conducting rites in the Great Temple. As Bayek leaves to eliminate Hetepi, Pasherenptah gave Bayek a blessing in gratitude. Bayek enters the temple and identifies Hetepi in the midst of many other priests and struck the Lizard down, Before dying, Hetepi simply justifies his atrocious actions that the populaces of Memphis are merely "cattle of the gods, driven by the herdsman's whip".[16]
Bayek returned to Cleopatra with Hetepi's mask and drop it to the ground, signifying that the wicked priest has been slain. Pasherenptah, relived that Memphis has been freed from the "curse" and that the Festival of Apis can be held once more. During the Festival of Apis, Aya told Bayek that she must soon leaves his side to perform her duty in the north sea. The two embraces each other before they part their way to pursue their own targets.[16]
The Crocodile
Bayek traveled to the region of Faiyum to meet up with the informant Hotephres. Only to discover that the informant's house was deserted. Bayek found the letter which reveals that The Crocodile knew Hotephres was the informant and had arrested Hotephres's servant for interrogation, Bayek rescued the servant and learned that Hotephres had escaped by ship to Lake Moeris.[17]

Bayek tracked down Hotephres's ship and met the informant. whom immediately draws his sword, thinking that Bayek is one of the Crocodile's men, Bayek shows his Medjay's badge to prove that he is an ally, Hotephres sheathes his sword and told the Medjay that he has stolen a ledger which could reveal to the Crocodile's identity and that the ledger was currently with his wife Khenut.[17]
Bayek meets Khenut the town of Euhemeria, The woman told Bayek that she had hidden the legder in their villa, before instructing her daughter Shadya, to lead the Medjay to the villa in question. As Bayek searches for the ledger, He finds a diary that reveals Shadya has taken the ledger with her in the hope of helping her father, Bayek immediately rushes back to Khenut, and find out that the soldiers have taken Khenut and Shadya to the nearby lighthouse.[17]

Bayek arrived at the lighthouse, Only to find Khenut crying on the ground, staring toward the lake. Bayek dives into the water and recovers Shadya's lifeless body. Hotephres later arrived at the scene, before stating that the "Crocodile" had won, as they had taken everything from him, Bayek promised the father that he would kill the "Crocodile" and avenge Shadya. Hotephres then told Bayek that the soldiers serving under the Crocodile were likely a Gladiator fighter from the arena in Krokodilopolis.[17]
Having gained a new lead, Bayek arrived at the arena of Krokodilopolis and learned about the Gallic Brothers who matched the description of the Crocodile's soldiers, He then spoke to the arena's owner Felix Martialis, who refused to give Bayek an entry and instead told the Medjay to go prove his worth by defeating another Siwan fighter that had come before him.[18]

Bayek met the Siwan fighter who was actually his childhood friend, Kensa. The two warmly greet each other, Bayek tells Kensa that he needs her help in persuading Felix to accept him into the arena, to which Kensa gladly agrees to help. The two then became a partner in the arena and fought together until they were eventually matched against the Gallic Brothers.[18]
The Siwan managed to defeat their opponents, as Bayek accused them of the murder of an innocent girl, The brothers denied that they had murdered Shadya, before spitting out the true name of the "Crocodile", Berenike. Kensa, distraught that Bayek did not tell her about his true goal, accuses him of not trusting her, though Bayek states that she was a mercenary just like the brothers Before promptly leaving the arena.[18]
Bayek later meets up with Hotephres, who told him that Berenike would likely reside in her estate at night, Bayek sneaks into the estate, only to discover that his own childhood friend, Kensa has been working with a child-killer all along, Bayek assassinated Berenike and in the Crocodile's last moment, Bayek furiously states that he would destroy everything she and all her kinds stands for.[18]
The Scorpion
Bayek returns to Cleopatra in her palace in Herakleion to report of his success, Where he gained two more names to his list, The "Jackal" whose true name was Septimius and the "Scorpion". After which, Apollodorus brought in The order's informant Livius, who possibly knew the name of Khemu's murderer, After some beating, Livius spitted out his brethen's name Venator, Before being brutally knocked out unconscious by Bayek.[19]
Bayek traveled to the local brothel which Livius has recently visited and learned of the location of Venator's house, At the house, Bayek discovered that Venator has been planning the assassination of Cleopatra involving three of his mercenaries, Bayek eliminated the mercenaries before they could strike.[19]

Bayek returns to Cleopatra and is reunited with Aya, However, their reunion is cut short by a sudden attack by Venator and his soldiers. After the brief skirmish, Venator was eventually slain by Bayek. Cleopatra then gave an order to her Medjay to deliver a message of her coming to a Roman general Pompey in seeking of alliance.[19]
However, they were too late, As Pompey had already been assassinated by Septimius. With no other options left, Cleopatra resorted to alliance with Caesar who was currently in Alexandria. Cleopatra and her company arrive at Alexandria and manage to interrupt the meeting between Ptolemy and Caesar and with her charms, Cleopatra successfully persuades Caesar to her side. Ptolemy, enraged at the loss of his potential ally, threatens Caesar with the lives of Romans in the city should Caesar decided to side with his sister.[20]
The next day, To impress Caesar and strengthen their alliance, Cleopatra orders her Medjays to unlock the tomb of Alexander the Great. However, they were interrupted by the news of Caesar's emissary being kidnapped by Ptolemy's soldiers, Bayek and Aya rescued the emissary and learned that Septimius and the "Scorpion" Pothinus were planning to besiege the harbour and retake the city's palace. Caesar came up with a plan to set the whole harbor aflame and escape the city, Caesar successfully escaped Alexandria and rendezvous with his reinforcements.[20]

Three days later the Battle of the Nile begins. with Caesar's and Ptolemy's forces clashing down on each other. Bayek confronts Pothinus, who is riding the massive war elephant, Bayek manages to defeat Pothinius and kills him in the battle. In his last moment, Pothinus claims that all of his actions were for the peace of Egypt.[21]
Bayek later confronts Septimius in the nearby village and bested the Jackal in combat, As Bayek unleashes his fury on the murderer of his son, He was restrained by Caesar's soldiers, who tell him that he will punish Septimius himself. Before being knocked out unconscious.[21]
On the other side of the battle, Aya found Ptolemy attempting to flees on the boat, However, he was suddenly attacked by the crocodiles and was killed, finally bringing the end to his regime.[21]
Betrayed by the Queen

After their victory against Ptolemy, Cleopatra made a speech to the populace of Alexandra that she would bring Egypt to a new era. The crowd cheers for their new queen, as Septimius stand beside Cleopatra, Unpunished for his crimes.[22]
Bayek and Aya later confronted Apollodorus, Who told them that their service was no longer needed and that Cleopatra had cut ties with them. Later that night, Bayek and Aya gathered their remaining allies to discuss the current situation, Bayek rallied up his allies to continue the fight agaisnt the Order and to protect the free will of the people as the Brotherhood.[22]

After the meeting, Aya suggests to Bayek that they should investigate the Tomb of Alexander, As Septimius has recently taken staff from the sarcophagus for an unknown reason. The two arrived at the tomb and found Apollodorus heavily wounded by Roman soldiers, Bayek and Aya defeated the soldiers but were not able to save Apollodorus in time. In his last moments, Apollodorus tells Bayek and Aya that Caesar's right-handman, Flavius Metellus was the true mastermind behind the murder of Khemu, and that Flavius was heading to Siwa with an orb-shaped relic.[22]
Return to Siwa

Bayek and Aya return to Siwa in pursuit of Flavius and Septimius, The two arrived at the opened Siwa vault, only to found Hepzefa's lifeless body on the ground, As Bayek mourns the loss of his friend, Aya hurries Bayek to continue the pursuit, However, Bayek refuses and states that they should first gave Hepzefa a proper burial. After the funeral of Hepzefa, Rabiah gave Hepzefa's sword to Bayek, saying that Hepzefa would want it to be passed down to him.[23]
Bayek and Aya later decided they should split up with Aya in pursuit of Septimius whom has fled to Rome and Bayek tracking down Flavius to somewhere in the north of Siwa.[23]
The Lion
With the power of Alexander's staff and the orb-shaped relic, Flavius corrupted the minds of everyone who stand in his path, Enslaving them to his own desire. This created a trail of chaos which leads Bayek all the way to the city of Cyrene.[23]

At the city, Bayek infiltrated the Roman's citadel and confronted Flavius inside the citadel's palace, With the power of the orb-shaped relic, Flavius conjured the specters of the Order members to attack the Medjay, However, Bayek managed to fend off the specters and eventually killed Flavius, In his last moment, Flavius claimed that the death of Khemu has granted him powers and respects from even Caesar himself. Despite this, Bayek is unable to finish off Flavius, However, Khemu appears in Bayek's visions and assures his father that his soul can finally rest with Flavius's death.[23]
Bayek reclaimed the orb-shaped relic from Flavius's corpse and returned to Aya and his allies in Alexandria. Upon hearing the news of Flavius's demise, Bayek and Aya embraced each other, Knowing that their son could finally rest in peace. Aya then informed Bayek that she must head to Rome to eliminate Septimius and Caesar alongside her Roman allies Brutus and Cassius, Before leaving, Bayek stores the orb-relic inside the hideout's chest, After deeming it too dangerous to be used by anyone.[24]

In the nearby beach, Bayek and Aya finally decided to sacrifice their bonds for the greater good And separated their ways to rally the common people to fight against their oppressors, Bayek discarded Khemu's eagle skull on the ground before stating that a new creed has been created, After Bayek leaves, Aya picks up the eagle skull, revealing the imprints resembling the insignia of the Assassins, an organization dedicated to protecting the freedom of humanity against the anyone who sought to control it.[24]
The Jackal
After the separation, Aya boarded a ship and sailed to Rome, At the Theatre of Pompey, Aya confronted Septimius in the Theatre's arena and bested the Jackal in combat. Aya then interrogates Septimius for the location of Alexander's staff, In which the latter states that the staff was kept within the Order, Before dying, Septimius claimed that he would be rewarded in the afterlife for all of his actions. In which Aya states that the only thing that waited for him is eternal oblivion before proceeding to slit Septimius's throat.[25]

Aya sneaked her way though the Threate's garden and reached the Senate's room, Where Caesar was currently attempting to persuades the senates to support his ascesion to the emperor of Rome. Aya took the chance and stabbed Caesar from the back, which signaled the other senators to also stabbed Caesar. with Brutus delivering the last blow. After the assassination, Aya placed a sword on Caesar's body in his honor.[25]
Two days after Caesar's death, Aya confronted Cleopatra and berates her former queen, As many of her friends has died to reclaim the throne for Cleopatra, Before threatens Cleopatra to be a better ruler should she not wish to met the same fate as Caesar.[25]
