In another incident involving Kassandra, a crew of smugglers led by a merchant named [[Sargon]] attempted to transport an abnormally huge and aggressive white bear from [[Arkadia]] to [[Kos]]. The damage the ship sustained set the bear free from its cage, and it subsequently slaughtered the entire crew save for a lone survivor named [[Iola]]. Bears (Ursidae family) are caniformian mammals generally found in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. They are large, typically carnivorous, and extremely strong.

History[edit | edit source]

Ancient Greece[edit | edit source]

Bears were endemic across Greece in ancient times. The Daughters of Artemis were able to tame bears and use them to protect their territories and assist them in hunting.[1] In the early years of the Peloponnesian War, a legendary gargantuan bear named Kallisto roamed Arkadia, making her lair within the Golden Fields. The leader of the Daughters of Artemis, Daphnae, tasked the Spartan misthios Kassandra the Eagle Bearer to hunt down the bear and bring back her pelt.[2] Prior to this, Kassandra had also tracked down a member of the Cult of Kosmos, Zoisme of the Worshippers of the Bloodline, to the den of a great white bear in Malis, where she assassinated her.[3]

Exekias and his bear companion

In the ancient Greek world, the taming of bears was not limited to the Daughters of Artemis. Apart from Zoisme, who lived among wild animals and was known enjoy feeding people to them,[4] some mercenaries also mastered the skill and kept bears as companions. Most notable among these was Exekias the Legend, who was also a Kosmos cultist and led their branch of warriors called the Heroes of the Cult. Both Exekias and his bear were eventually slain by Kassandra.[5]

In another incident involving Kassandra, a crew of smugglers led by a merchant named Sargon attempted to transport an abnormally huge and aggressive white bear from Arkadia to Kos. Unfortunately for them, a storm at sea devastated the ship and ran them aground on a beach in Delos. The damage the ship sustained set the bear free from its cage, and it subsequently slaughtered the entire crew save for a lone survivor named Iola. Mindful of the Delians' severe law against the spilling of blood on their soil, the injured Iola refrained from contacting the authorities for help. She lingered around the site for a while, paying mercenaries who passed by to kill the bear for her, but none succeeded until Iola encountered the Eagle Bearer. After a vicious fight, Kassandra managed to slay the bear, but she uncovered clues from the shipwreck leading her to deduce Iola's connection to it in the process. Though she pressured Iola to reveal the whole story, she accepted her payment without reporting her to the Delians.[6]

At the time, the fangs of average bears were valued at 6 drachmae while their furs, regarded to be especially well-suited for keeping warm, were valued at 42 drachmae. The skins from the bears on the island of Chios were of exceptional quality and as such could be sold for 300 drachmae. A merchant in Mytilene, Lesbos sought the Chiot bear skin for the creation of a suit of armor.[7] The bladders of the bears were utilized by spies working for Athens to hide messages.[8]

Scandinavia[edit | edit source]

Eivor following Njal

During her adventures throughout the British Isles in the 9th century, the Raven Clan Viking Eivor Varinsdottir encountered a number of bears amongst the wildlife.[9] One of the noteworthy bears she met was Njal, the albino bear who was a companion to the berserkr Bjorn Bloodtooth.[10]

During the 10th century, Eric the Victorious, the King of Sweden, owned a bear named Astrid, whom he had raised since she was a cub.[11]

American colonies[edit | edit source]

Like in Europe, humans hunted bears in North America. In the mid-18th century, the Templar Shay Cormac killed polar bears and black bears alike, using their pelts to enhance his equipment.[12]

The Louisianian Assassin Aveline de Grandpré was once kidnapped by thugs hired by her family's business rival Bouché. During her escape, she was cornered by a penned bear, which she managed to kill despite being only armed with her Hidden Blades.[13]

In 1769, a Kanien'kehá:ka boy named Ratonhnhaké:ton encountered a bear outside his village while hunting for his coming-of-age rite.[14] In time, he gained the strength and agility necessary to hunt bears for their pelts and meat. He also discovered that an especially good hunting ground for bears was located in the south-west corner of the Packanack region.[15]

Ratonhnhaké:ton fighting a bear

Later in life as a young Assassin roaming the Frontier, Ratonhnhaké:ton learned of a man-eating bear that had attacked a campsite. He entered its cave and lured it with a fresh corpse, granting him the opportunity to kill and skin it.[16] He also once encountered a hostile bear on the Davenport Homestead when the farmer Warren reported his wife Prudence missing after she had gone to gather evening primrose and not returned. Ratonhnhaké:ton found her cornered by a bear and killed it before carrying her to safety.[17]

In a vision of an alternate reality cast by an Apple of Eden, King George Washington and Benedict Arnold both kept bears as pets. While working to overthrow the king in New York City, Ratonhnhaké:ton undertook a spirit journey and encountered the spirit of the bear, which granted him its strength, so he could kill multiple soldiers at once.[18]

Animus mods[edit | edit source]

In 2020, while reliving Eivor's genetic memories through the Portable Animus HR-8.5, the Assassin Layla Hassan could modify the Animus interface and allow for a variety of skins to be applied to her horse:

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

In Assassin's Creed III, baby bears can be encountered in the Frontier, but they cannot be killed.
