The Experto Crede (English: Believe the expert) was a brig and former slave ship captained by the Assassin Adéwalé during the mid-18th century.

History[edit | edit source]

Following the loss of his previous ship, the Victoire, and his marooning on Saint-Domingue, Adéwalé managed to seize the Experto Crede from the French in 1735. With her, Adéwalé sought to destroy the island's local slave trade, in support of the Maroon rebellion.[1]

Adéwalé notably utilized the Experto Crede to sink a number of pirate ships attacking the Vautour, to ensure the safety of the French Geodesic Mission, which had been infiltrated by the Maroons.[2] Two years later, he used her to attack a slave ship near Cumberland Bay, though the vessel ultimately sank after its own escorts opened fire on it, resulting in the deaths of most of the slaves onboard.[3]

After leaving Saint-Domingue and returning to the Assassins, Adéwalé continued to use the Experto Crede as his flagship, and the vessel officially entered the service of the Brotherhood. Following the 1751 Port-au-Prince earthquake, Adéwalé sailed the Experto Crede from Haiti to the Davenport Homestead, where he received supplies for the earthquake's survivors from the Colonial Assassins.[4]

In 1758, the Experto Crede supported the French in the Siege of Louisbourg and led a swarm of fireships against the Royal Navy. However, James Cook's ship, HMS Pembroke, sank the fireships, forcing the Assassin ship to flee.[5] These actions later turned Adéwalé into a target for the Colonial Templars, who used the Morrigan, captained by Shay Cormac, to attack the Experto Crede while she was docked at the Île des Pins. Adéwalé spotted the incoming Templars and tried to use his ship's mortars to keep the Morrigan at bay, but the Experto Crede suffered considerable damage in the ensuing fight and the Assassin was forced to beach the ship in Vieille Carrière to save his crew. Shortly after, Adéwalé would be assassinated by Shay.[6]
