You cannot know anything. Only suspect.

They call me many things: Murderer. Cutthroat. Thief. But you may call me The Sunlight Sword.

―The Sunlight Sword[src]-[m]

The Sunlight Sword was a Japanese rōnin and member of the Chinese Brotherhood of Assassins who lived during the Ming dynasty.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1543, the Chinese Brotherhood sent the Sunlight Sword to join an Assassin team led by Shao Jun to the Gotō Islands outside Japan. Their mission was to intercept the priest João Machado, a Templar and the Portuguese Jesuit Gaspar Vilela's right-hand man, as he returned to China aboard one of Wang Zhi's pirate ships. Ostensibly tasked with taking possession the ship's cargo of arquebuses, there was also an Apple of Eden present.[1]

As the Assassins boarded the ship, the Sunlight Sword took enemy fire damaging his samurai armor. Throwing caution to the wind, he charged the pirates and Portuguese arquebusiers, allowing Shao Jun to incapacitate Machado and recover the Apple. However, a dying gunman managed to light a store of gunpowder, forcing the survivors to disengage.[1]

Having survived the previous engagement, the Sunlight Sword, once again under the command of Shao Jun, crossed paths with João Machado for a second time in 1552. The Templar, now a commander within the Military Order of Aviz, ferried a Precursor box looted from Francis Xavier,[2] a fellow Templar,[3] to his master Gaspar Vilela in Nagasaki, Japan.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The Sunlight Sword is a character introduced in the Assassin's Creed Roleplaying Game. His artwork is based on Hattori Hanzō's appearance in the 2015 digital card game Assassin's Creed: Memories.

Promotional material originally had the Sunlight Sword appear in a slightly different version of The Nanban Trade sequence under the name Akira, which among its various meanings includes the word "sunlight".[4]
