Grimes
Major Grimes was an English major officer in the British Army who lived during the mid-19th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1851, Lieutenant Grimes was aboard the HMS Birkenhead, which began to sink after hitting a large rock near Cape Town. Grimes ordered his men to calm down the horses while ignoring the pleas to save the injured soldiers, especially those of Lance Corporal Simeon Price. However, before he could give more orders, he was temporarily knocked out by an unknown cloaked figure.[1]
Grimes regained consciousness soon after and ordered the surviving men to bear the crash, disregarding the captain's order to abandon the ship. He kept yelling orders as soldiers began to die from the destruction of the ship.[1]
In 1862, at the Horse Guards in London, a promoted and older Major Grimes was called to the stand during the trial of desertion against Simeon Price. He proclaimed that Price was a coward and endangered lives by running away; however, Corporal Sawyer Halford questioned if Simeon had directly injured his fellow soldiers. Grimes remained brief in his responses, especially once Price verbally berated him for not being held accountable for his orders and how men had died under his ridiculous orders. The major officer was left stifled as he later left the stand.[2]
