Jovita Ferreira was a Brazilian performer and acrobat for the Aurora Equestrian Troupe.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Troupe days[edit | edit source]

Jovita Ferreira was once married but ran away from her life in Brazil and joined the circus. Within the troupe, she learned how to vault and to perform somersaults and flips.[1]

In 1851, the troupe opened up in the Crystal Palace at the Great Exhibition, where Jovita took over Pierrette Arnaud's act while Arnaud performed the Mazeppa act for the first time. She helped by acting for the woman's part as she held a trophy for Arnaud to catch. However, Jovita and the audience saw Arnaud go off-script as she saved Ada Lovelace and ran with the countess away from the circus.[1] After that night, she went back to partnering with Pierrette after Major Wallin hired a new performer for Mazeppa.[2]

In 1853, Jovita and her troupe found a temporary location while in Vienna. Adapting their routine, Jovita, Ariel Fine, and Hugh Robinson performed a new act for their crowds.[3] Traveling for two years around Europe, their performances were riveting until both Major Wallin and his daughter Tillie Wallin fell ill to typhoid. In 1855, while in Frankfurt, as the Wallin's recuperated, Jovita, Ariel, Hugh, Nell Robinson, and Pierrette discussed their future for the troupe. After Arnaud's idea for Birmingham, she and the rest of the troupe agreed, more or less.[4]

Life after the troupe[edit | edit source]

After many years, the troupe dissolved as Jovita had fallen in love with a New York musician. As a result, she moved to New York to be with her partner.[5]
