Týr was an Isu who was later revered as the god of war, justice, diplomacy, and peace in Norse mythology. A member and former leader of the Æsir, he sacrificed his arm to help Odin imprison Loki's illegitimate son, Fenrir, for good.
Names
In addition to being known by the Anglicized Tyr, he was also called Tíw by the Anglo-Saxon pagans along with the title of justice-bringer.[2] Through the ages, he was also referred to as Mars by the ancient Romans.[3]
Biography
Formerly the War Lord of the Æsir, Týr lost his position when Odin defeated him in a battle of martial skills. Fairly conceding defeat, Týr accepted his new role as a loyal lieutenant to Odin. The All-Father rewarded his trust with making Týr his confidant and chief lawgiver.[4]
As the Great Catastrophe approached, Týr and the other eight Norse Isu uploaded their DNA data into Yggdrasil to be later redistributed into the human gene pool.[5] Millennia later, in 842 CE, Týr was successfully reincarnated as Sigurd Styrbjornson.[6]
Legacy and influence
Týr had a totem named after him in the popular dice game Orlog, played in the 9th century. The piece "Tyr's Pledge" would allow players to sacrifice a number of health tokens in order to destroy an opponent's God Favor. An Anglo-Saxon woman in Fearnhamme, Hamtunscire possessed the piece, which she gave to the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan after being defeated.[7]
Familiar with the legends of Týr, Grace Collins warned Owen Meyers over approaching the dog archetype within their shared Animus session at the Aerie around 2016.[8]
Personality and characteristics
While Týr prided himself on his unchallenged reputation as a fair and even-handed judge, he occasionally expressed an intense distrust of the Vanir over reasons he refused to fully disclose.[4]
