Josephine Baker
- "I will embrace my death, completely breathless and spent, at the end of a dance."
- ―Nancy Drake, 1942.[src]
Freda Josephine Baker (née McDonald; 1906 – 1975), naturalised as Joséphine Baker, was an American-born French dancer, singer and actress.
During World War II, Josephine served as a member of the French Resistance and was based in Paris during the German occupation. In 1942, she worked with fellow Resistance members Nancy Wake and partisan Reboante to aid the Assassins Major Gallagher and The Ambassador in an infiltration mission. The Resistance helped them to infiltrate a party held by the German Templar Wilhelm Schmidt at the Folies Bergère. At the theater, Josephine and Nancy were nearly compromised when they were stopped by the junior officer Oskar Fiedler from entering the back door, which led Nancy to drew her Luger pistol and shoot the German officer in the face, blowing the undercover mission. Nevertheless, the Assassins were able to retrieve important Templar intel and escape alongside the Resistance members.[1]
